an interesting thought (a "should read" for people with 5 speed conversions and......

a should for people thinking bout 5-speed conversions

I was sitting home one day with my friend and thought about putting a turbo in my car and then thought about the two maximas that are turbo charged that stand out in my head.....nigel and the other guy who had the VQ30DET....so i got to thinking first i needed a tranny swap from my auto to stick in order to hear the nice blow off the turbo makes...then i thought about where i can get a 5-speed tranny...and two and two came together and i thought that it would be a great idea to get the VQ30DET 5-speed tranny as a swap....i figured that the tranny should be similar since the VQ30DET seems like a japanese upgraded version of my stock eninge, so the tranny should just fit right in right?considereing that the nissan sr20det motors are in downtuned in 240sx as regular sr20DE motors..... i thought of some advangtages with this idea.....1)its a j-spec tranny from a j-spec motor, usually, witht the right connections, people can get j-spec enignes and/or tranny's for cheap....i kno a few people that can get me sr20 enignes for around $1500w with tranny...so i figured that maybe i could get a VQ30DET tranny for somewhere around $500-$1000, and j-spec engines and trannys have low mileage on them already because this one guy who specializes in those kinds of motors was telling me that "in japan, people over there don't get one thing too long, so as soon as their cars get over 40k miles on it, the trade it in and then the car gets stripped for its parts", he said that, so don't quote me for saying this.....this little fact that i could get a 5-speed tranny with 40k miles seems reasonalbe to me because my 97 maxima only has 43k miles on it (don't ask me why its so low, i bought it that low)and i wouldn't have to get a higher mileage tranny like around 60-80k like some of the people on this site i've seen...2)i was thinking, since the tranny is from a stock turbo engine, that maybe the tranny is tweaked for a turbo and is more reienforced for high psi....i'm not sure if our current tranny can withhold high psi, i've seen nigel do about 11 psi, but since the tranny from the VQ30DET is a turbo tweaked tranny, i was thinking (i may be wrong) that this tranny is more for turbo and high psi like 15 or sumthin like that....i've seen and heard that the first thing that goes usually with people who are running with high psi is the tranny...then i thought that all this thinking could just be a waste of thinking because i realized that the VQ30DET is a rear wheel drive engine, so does that mean that the tranny won't just "fit" right in my car? i'm no mechanic or a engine specialist, i'm jus a 18 y/o who's first car happened to be a maxima, this weird idea just popped in my head today....does the fact that the vq30det being a rear wheel drive engine make the tranny not compatible with our cars? would it just "fit" right in? or would there be more work invovled? this is a interesting thought for those who are thinking about doing a 5-speed conversion and running turbo l8er down the road.

you know i was seriously considering the 5 speed conversion for a while.... then i talked to some people. now i know that the people who have done the conversion are prolly happy w/ it. but roughly 2000 dollars and the heckache of tryin to find a decent transmission, orderin parts, and installation all for making your car a 5 speed (not to mention would could possibly go wrong, although we all know that IT IS very doable) seems a lot to ask for when u wan a 5 speed. i guess people have their own opinions, but 2000 is a good amount of money, and i think trading in for a car that came out of the factory w/ a manual tranny seems like a wiser decision. okay, i guess im jus babbling now. i hope nobody is stupider after reading this. neway, what do all u guyz think?

you could hook up the drive shaft to the driver's side wheel and have a 1 wheel drive car.

j/k. won't fit.
