VI guys: Why are we using a vacuum tank?

Why are we running a vacuum tank with the VI?

Couldn't we accomplish the same thing by just running a check valve only? I was under the impression that the engine is always developing vacuum therefore there's no need for a vacuum tank. Does the 3rd gen or 5th gen have a vacuum tank? Can someone please elaborate or help me understand?

I'm surprised no one's answered this yet. At WOT manifold vacuum is zero.

That's why I've been having so much trouble determining if its working at WOT or not, because even if my vacuum system were hooked up WRONG, it would still open at PARTIAL throttle (as in hand manipulating the throttle under the hood) but at WOT it wouldn't. Since I can't go WOT in neutral I could never actually see if the valves were opening when I was moving.

Ummm okay, I see. I forgot there is no vacuum at WOT.

If you really are having trouble determining if your VI really is working at WOT, why don't you just hard wire the solenoid to a toggle switch and open it yourself from the interior? Another test is take some grease and put it on the stopper pin of the VI manifold. If and when the VI opens, the butterfly actuator assembly should hit the grease on the pin and there should be grease on the assembly when you pop the hood.

Can you not hear your intake take on a different sound with the butterflies open? I sure can. I can also tell it's working because my tach just flies to the redline.

Did you ever get around to replacing the EGR gasket or IACC gaskets? Vacuum leaks can really kill performance.

To answer your second questions the 3rd Gen VEs do have vacuum canisters. That's where I got mine:

I meant before... I know now (from my top speed test) that it is definately working.
