Almost died last night ABS lifesaver
I was driving late and there was some road construction. my i30 barely fit through the cones set up along the gardrail. I was coming up the on ramp about 55 or 60 and looked back for a second and all of a sudden a car was at a dead stop. i slammed on my brakes which stopped the car pretty good, i swerved out of the way of the car, maneuvered (with brakes all the way down) through two cones and came to a stop NO JOKE less than a foot from a 6 foot drop where road was missing due to construction. i didnt hit a damn thing thank god for ABS!!!

I only thought ABS were good in the rains, but ABS is good in all situations because they prevent brake lock ups. I was slowing down from about 100mph and my brakes locked up. I slid like 30 feet, from the point I should have stopped, while pressing on the brake with all my might. You probably never exprienced this, as you have ABS. That was the first time my brakes ever locked up on me too.

Just to clarify, you were going 60 on an on-ramp that had been condensed into one lane due to construction?

It's sucks that Nissan had ABS as an option for so long on the maxima before they made it a standard feature. On dry pavement ABS does not stop shorter than a car equiped without ABS. ABS does give you the ability to steer and maintain control of your vehicle. Once you skid you have lost traction and control.

i have a 96 max with abs and i have locked up my brakes on several occations. abs only helps you when you are applying the brake hard to stop reasonably quickly. but when you slam the brake to the ground (and you have abs not anti-lock brakes they are very different)all four of your tires can and will lock up and you will slide for a ways. anti-lock brakes on the other hand will NEVER lock up no matter what you do. abs is better in that you can stop quicker in dry weather if needed but the negative side is that you can not steer if the tires locked up. anti-lock brakes are better in snow and rain in that you can slam the pedal to stop as fast as possible and dont have to worry about the tires locking and loosing control.

Holy smokes 96'I30 you sure got really lucky not to maention that god was on your side, but glad to hear you're OK.
I wish my SE came w/ ABS, but oh well that was my brother's decision not to get it in '98.

I know what you mean, why make ABS an option for Nissan's flagship sedan for long enough when this feature should be standard besides dual & side airbags. OT but even the Pathfinder before it got restyled w/ the 99.5 - present look has had ABS standard for quite some time before Nissan finally decided to make it standard for Maxima.
Anyway, Nissan is still making ABS optional on Altima & Sentra(considering the Altima is now at least the same size as the Maxima) but in a way I'm glad they finally made it standard when the 5th gen Maxima 1st rolled out in late 99.

wow man. i bet your heart was pumping after you stopped. abs has saved me a couple times before too...oh how im grateful for it. but still...going 60 in a tight space in construction doesnt sound too smart.

A few notes >>
96'i30Man: Slow down in construction zones! What if there were work crews on site? You could've killed someone. There is a reason why they reduce the speed limit in work zones. Mind the orange signs.

You are right someone could have died. Workers were out and it was late they saw the whole thing. The speed limit by the way was 50mph, so 10 over aint that bad....right??
