Very difficult to change out of Park

As the subject reads, it's impossible to change out of park just using the button on the shifter.

I believe I spilled Coke down underneath all that plastic and f*cked it up. There is a little tiny motor (I think) that helps take the car out of park, but it's not engaging. So for now, I am using a screw driver to manipulate it, but it's retarded!

Do I need to replace the electrical motor that helps change out of park or just clean it?

Thx for your help!

Mine started doin that a while ago and I just pushed it in and out a few times to loosen it up and after a while it is better. Its probably just getting old.

I have the same problem, but not as severe though. I wish there was a way to clean out the whole trans. I agree that the problem is caused by fluids leaking though the shifter.

It doesn't matter if I am at an incline or not. My question is, is it a "do it yourself" or take it to a mechanic??

i have the same problem...when I park my car in the driveway (inclined) its difficult to shift out of park, and I must pull teh shifter back really hard. Anyhow, a friend had an older accord ('92) and she had the same problem...until one day, it was virtually impossible to shift the damn thing out of park. Their mechanic changed the wire that leads to the shifter and the problem went away.

You know you can use the e-brake to take the pressure off the transmission on an incline and this problem will go away. At least thats how it works on every car I have ever parked. Maybe you have a different problem though.

yeah i had forgotten to mention that i ritually use the e-brake every time i park. it has been difficult to shift after I leave the car sitting for two days. I presume it will get worse over time unless I figure out how to fix it.

Okay, coke was the problem, and WD-40 is the answer. Give the thing a few squirts and it should be just as good as new.

Exactly how and when do you set the e-brake.
When I park on an incline, I press the brake pedal, then pull the e-brake, shift into park, and then release the brake pedal.

When I go back out of park, I press the brake pedal, shift to reverse, then release the e-brake, then release the brake pedal --

When I do it all in that sequence, I got no problems.

BTW the reason for the shifter getting stuck is because there is air trapped in the shifter lines. It needs to be bled just like your brakes. Hope this helps.

"Heart Attack"

Hahahaha I won't have a heart attack. I will just let them complain about the incline. Doesn't matter what kind of car you have, it's always going to be difficult to change into gear, on an incline. Think about it, all the weight is putting pressure on the car...
