hood supports

The hood supports on my 96 maxima are shot, they will no longer keep my hood up. Does anyone know where I can buy some replacements. I went to nissan but they want way toooo much for them. I've heard of the strong-arm brand but I don't know where to get them. Can anyone help and let me know where I can get some replacements for a good price.

funny...I was looking at some today...
I'm Colorado on business, and stopped into an auto parts store...
The gas-shock hood supports were $25 (US), but they had none in stock.

How much did the dealer want?
Oh, and I believe the brand was Lift Rite?

they usually have the shock type things at Advanced Auto Parts or a store like that for around $20-$30 ( dont know if thats a set or just one). friend of mine just bought them for the rear gate cover on his truck and they work fine, i would check a place like that out first just to see whats up...

funny thing, but i went to pep-boys and asked if they could order a hood support from their warehouse, since they carried supports made by Stabilus in-store. They checked and said their supplier doesnt carry supports for the max. But the OEM hood lifts on my 99max are stabilus! Sounds like their making good $$ thru the dealer by not selling to resellers!!

2.Go to Advance auto parts get gas struts at $17.00 a piece with lifetime warranty.
i prefer the second one,
Take care,

Replacing worn hood lift supports

Thanks to members "NUGE" and "Daniel B. Martin" for their help

Here are part numbers for the MUCH cheaper alternative to the factory OEM hood supports, which seem to get weak releatively quickly.

Nissan OEM
Part Numbers: 65470-40u00 (Left) 65471-40u00(Right)
Cost: about $68 each from nissanautoparts.com, Courtesy Nissan, etc.

Alternatives
These replacement struts are made by "Strong Arm" and are cheap alternatives to the "weak" OEM ones:

Strong Arm #4524 (Aftermarket): about $16 each

These can be ordered online from this specific link:

http://www.partsamerica.com/SelectPa...artNumber=4524

If you want to purchase some locally, these are what the various Auto Parts stores may refer to them as instead of Strong Arm #4524 :

NAPA Auto Parts: Part # 819-4737
Autozone: Part # 95784 ( Mighty Lift )
Kragen: part # 072-862 ( Steady Lift )
Car Quest: Part # 4524

How to install:

Installation is not difficult. Prop the hood open with a broomstick. Use a 13mm open end wrench to remove the upper (hood) and lower (inner fender) ball studs. The ball studs are permanently mounted to the sockets on each end of the factory lift. After both studs are backed out of their threaded holes, the lift comes off the car (with the ***** still in their sockets). The Strong Arm replacements ball studs are not attached to the replacement lifts. Thread the ball studs into the threaded holes on the hood and inner fender and tighten with a suitable wrench. Then simply "snap" each socket end of the replacement lift on the ball studs. Repeat the process for the other side.

These have a LIFETIME warranty. Even if these wear out again, then take you receipt back and the struts and exchange them for a new set. It beats paying $140 each time for the OEM ones that aren't any better.

Here's even another choice:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1853104522

and he has more too:

I just bought some from him last week and they arrived as advertised, quickly, and via USPS priority in a few days. I'm not advertising for him or anything, just thought I'd let you guys know that he is reputable, or atleast was with me, and you can get them shipped for about $40/set. He even answered my emails. Just a thought.
