car making noise on cold starts
car making noise on cold starts
When I start my car in the morning I hear a high pitched whine. It last for a couple minutes then it fades away. Upon inspection, the sound seems to be coming from the crank pulley. If I give it a shot of WD-40, or oil the noise stops immediately(until next time I start it). What could be making this noise? Maybe I need new belts?
Lubing the belts will definately stop them from squeaking, unfortunately it also keeps them from working. They depend on friction to transfer energy from the crankshaft pulley to the other pulleys.
You need to tighten the belts, not grease them. Don't over-tighten them or you will burn up the shaft bearings that the pulleys ride on. Also, get all of that WD-40 off and add a little belt dressing. It comes in a tube and looks like tar. DON'T APPLY IT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING OR YOU WILL LOOSE A FINGER!

It really helps if you can look at a diagram. I would suggest you buy a Haynes, Chilton or Factory Service Manual and carefully review the procedures.

Basicly, you need to loosen the adjustment bolts on the driven component, i.e. power steering pump, a/c compressor, etc. In almost all cases, there is a bolt that holds the component in adjustment and another bolt that the component pivots on; you need to loosen them both. Some components have an adjustment screw that you turn to tighten or loosen the belt, others you move by hand or with a pry bar.
Hope this helps.
