painting engine

Can you use Caliper paint on your engine to paint the valve cover? I'm only asking because I have some left over.

How much left over? I painted my valve cover (bought engine enamel for like $3) and almost used all of it. So be careful, you will probably need more than you think, at least to make it look good. I say just go to autozone and buy some for $3 or $4.

Would this be like a weekend type "mod"? Does the paint have to like cure for a while?

It only takes about 5 hours to do this...what i did was paint my valve cover and then an hour later put another coat on and it came out perfect....i decided to let it dry for 4 hours just to be safe..Looks absolutely perfect...easy, cheap way to clean up your engine

Well, if you use Caliper paint, that crap dries quickly. You can easily do 4-5 coats in less than an hour. But I do recommend that you sand the valve cover a little bit. This will make the job look more professional...

Hey, you have a very similar combo. I used to drive a Volvo 850 Turbo (now my dad's car), and I now drive a 5spd SE 4th gen (98').

Hmm

Few question people, i gave this idea a whirl and no luck. I bough a can of spray from autozone for like 3$ and went home and tried to spray it, but the paint wouldnt stick it just ran right off. Do i need to clean or prep it with something first. Or maybe a different paint. My cover is a hard plastic material, is that what everyone elses is? Any ideas or info on my problems are greatly appreciated thanks

I was thinking of doing this as well. For those who have done this, did you spray the whole thing or just the letters or everything but the letters? Did you use tape to block the non-painted surface?
Thanks,
Dan

Seems like half of the people are talking about spark plug cover and the other half is actually talking about the aluminum valve cover. Spray paint on anything won't last long. If you want something that reallly sticks. Powdercoating is the way to go.

Well

I picked up a can of "Plasti-kote" Brake Caliper Paint today.
It was $4.99 at Advanced auto Parts.
The label reads 900 degree coating, with Chemical, chip, and rust resistant.
On the label it also reads that it's made for Brake calipers, brake drums, engine blocks and components.
I apparently can't apply it yet, though, you can only spray it when the temp out side is between 60F and 80F to ensure it cures properly. It takes about 3 to 4 coats but to be safe I'll use 5 if I have enougth.

DUDE! That looks SOOOOOO good. Where did you get that done? Is it powder coated or spray paint? How much did it cost? Is it a pain to get off?
Thanks,
Dan

Nick,

I j/ went to autozone and found red engine enamel. I forgot what it was rated at for temp wise tho (don't have the can anymore). I remember though it was ford red for the color, and it just said engine enamel, and i checked that it was rated high enough. no problems at all. it was only like $3, but i used almost the whole can. hope that helps

Polished and then powedercoated with candy blue color. R&R valve cover is like a 20 mins job. Cost...about $180 includes new spark plug gaskets.
