My 97 SE has a new problem. It ocasionally won't start. Has happened a couple of times now. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. It will run fine all day, then I can turn it off and it won't start for few hours. Sometimes it simply won't start first thing in the morning. Every time it has done this it has been under different circumstances.

 

Do you mean it won't turn over or it turns over but doesn't start.

I think You have a bad starter solenoid, next time it won't start get some one to hold the key in the start position while you tap the starter with a hammer. If it starts when you do this you have a bad solenoid and need to replace your starter. There are other things I need to know before I can tell you for sure what it is, like have you tried to jump start it when it does this. Try some things and if it isn't the solenoid then get back to me, you can email me with questions and I'll try to help you as much as possible, good luck and try my fisrt suggestion first.

Towed it to the dealer. They said it was the ignition. They are going to replace it tomorrow morning. $375 parts & labor?? are they shafting me?

You should have checked the starter first!!!!! ah well here's the process... I'm VERY experienced w/ this problem because i've had it on my 89 Celica and finally figured it out last month after years of starting problem... i actually went through 3 starters before i figured it out. Anyways, the problem was the WIRES. Specifically the wires involved in the circuit of the starter. (starter-> ignition -> battery). Anywho, what you should have done is disconnected the starter wire that connects to the starter (+ wire). Then, get another seperate wire (about 12 gauge) and connect it to the starter then w/ the other end of teh wire, touch the positive terminal of the battery. If it cranks EVERY time then that means the original wires are bad. Perhaps it could be the ignition that is bad but that only would happen if there is not enough electricity conducting through the wires... which means the wires are bad.

For 375... damn that's alot. Instead go get ureself a starter button! it's pretty damn simple wiring it and ALOT cheaper than 375 lol. Well that was the way i went w/ my celica. Good luck.

 

i car wouldnt start yesterday....i'm pretty sure its the starter...so i tried the hammer thing and still wont start so ends up that i have to have it towed early tomorrow morning to maximus75 shop and hes gonna take care of it...the starter su***
