Redline trans fluid worth it?

I changed to Redline MT-90 about 3 weeks ago and have not noticed any appreciable improvement in shifting smoothness. If anything it seems to be a little rougher than before. A total disappointment after hearing other guys rave about it being a night and day difference and a worthwhile expenditure. For $7 a quart I was hoping for a little more I guess, oh well.

I changed the fluid also about 1 month ago and still couldn't feel the difference..maybe a little bit...but I really have a peace in mind since my transmission is protected with a really good fluid and I don't have to worry about change it anymore.
Redline MT-90 $7 a quartz.
socket wrench $20
a peace in mind knowing that your transmission is protected really good -- priceless

I think it worths it. I use MT-90 on my previous car, '92 NX2000, and D4 ATF on my '97 Max.

The main difference is the smoother shifting in winter morning, plus you know it provides better protection.

You'll notice a bigger difference in winter.

Some General Transmission questions...

I JUST bought T-fluid 30 minutes ago. Don't we use Decron III? That is what the computer said...If I use D III will it screw things up? It is a 1996...

On a side note, I just bought my max @ 58K and I need to do ao tranny flush and fill for the 60K service. Is there actually a "flush," or is it just drain and refill? Also, the local auto store does not have a Haynes for the maxima and I want to do the fluid tonight. Can anyone tell me where the drain plug is? A scan of the pics or a link to a service pic would be great.

Lastly, how do you guys dispose of used tranny fluid?

BTW, if this is in FAQ, I could not find it...

If you have a shortshifter... then YES, you will feel a difference. I need to switch back to RedLine because when i had my major mileage maintenance done at nissan, they flushed the tranny system and put the OEM stock fluid back in... and w/ my shortshifter, the shifting is quite notchy. RedLine will smooth it out.

Re: Some General Transmission questions...

First, let me assume you have an auto. If not, then ignore all the below.

Did you buy the Redline? Or other brand? I will recommend Redline or Mobil 1. If you go for Redline, make sure you get the D4 ATF, not the regular ATF. Mobil 1 is cheaper.

As for flush, your local Jiffy Lube, K-Mart, or Volvoline Oil Change place should do it. All stores I called won't allow me to bring in my own Redline, so I did a total flush first, then do the drain and refill with Redline.

The drain plug is easy to find, but I can't really ping point the exact location. Sorry.

I have a STS and it made the biggest difference, the shifts arent as notchy and it feels much smoother. It IS worth it

Hmm I beg to differ. I got my tranny oil swapped with MT-90 and I didn't notice much of a difference. Even though the old regular tranny oil was pretty new, it provides the same smoothness as redline does.

The biggest differences are in winter and if you got a STS. Then you will notice it big time.

When you get a short shifter, do you have to change the transmission fluid, too?

Redline, Amsoil, Mobil-1, none of them are magic or really much better than clean new normal gear oil under ideal operating conditions. If you've got a bad 2nd gear syncro, you'll still have a bad syncro with Redline.

The difference you would notice would probably only be under adverse conditions such as cold or very hot. When cold, the synthetics tend not to form that hard molasses that dino oil does. They stay more fluid. When very hot they really shine over the dino oil.

The main benefit though and well worth the cost for tranny oil is in the added protection you'll likely never "notice" that the superior oils have given you. Bearings and such should last much, much longer compared to dino oils. It's especially true for tranny/diff oils since most people don't change them as often as motor oils. I know I've had my Redline in there for about 50k miles....

The folks that claim it's made their shifting 300% better/faster are most likely fooling themselves.

How long will MT-90 last?

I had a drain of tranny fluid at 60K
on my 98 5spd. They managed to pour in
4.7 quarts of MT-90. My question is when
should I get the next drain/refill done
(or should it be a flush/refill)? Winter
shifting in the mornings definitely
improved, but otherwise it's not a whole
lot different from stock.
Thanks

4.7Q? I thought we needed like ~10Q of tranny fluid....maybe I'm wrong?

Re: Re: How long will MT-90 last?

10q is for complete flush & refill.
Draining fluid plug via gravity will
only get out half of it (or 5.3 q
in my case...)

5 Speed Manual total fluid capacity = 5 quarts
4 Speed Auto total fluid capacity = 10 quarts

Actually getting a 5 speed to take 4.7 qts. is pretty good.

There's no need to flush a manual transmission, gravity will drain all the fluid out just fine. The reason you have to flush the auto is that fluid gets stuck in the torque converter, not an issue on a 5 speed.

Aaahahah, my bad. I read it out of my Chilton's: 9.125 - 10.125 PINTS, but for some reason I thought it said QUARTS....heheh. It all makes sense now.

I thought the same, that you needed 10. Another questions is, if Jiffy lube and other places are willing to flush your tranny but not use good fluid. What do you do? Do you have them flush it and then say "that will be it Bob, I'll take it from here", and pour your own fluid? Hehe...
