idle problem (rough)

I had been sitting in the car with the AC on for about 10 minutes when the car started shaking a little. I turned the AC off and the idle went down to around 500 and is jumping around. Not steady at 800 like it usually is. It almost seems like it wants to stall. I looked under the hood and all the liquids are normal and so is the intake. Do I need to clean the intake? I've only had it on for about 3-4000 miles. I have 54k miles now.
I took it to a nissan dealership and the guy told me that it was $65 to just check what was wrong with it and that the intake will void my extended warranty. I had to put him in his place about that one.
Anyways, I need help guys, what do you guys think the problem is? I'm at work now and I'm hoping I won't have a problem driving home.

thanks.

Three things to check.

1) Clean your throttle body.
2) Clean your IAC valve
3) Check your TPS sensor - you should get a CEL light if it's gone bad.

Usually, symptoms like that involve the TPS. I don't remember the specifics on checking it but I do know you need to use a multimeter and unplug the brown harness on the TPS. As for the ohms you should be reading, I need to get them of my spec sheet at home so I can get back to you with that info by 10PM eastern time. Try running a search on TPS and I'm pretty sure you'll find a few posts with the instructions to do this. Hope this helps ya diagnose the problem.

Well, its gone from bad to worse. I figured that I would ride it out until the weekend, but no such luck the car died today. I was driving home, but the car kept stalling out. I tried to keep it revving but the car kept sputtering, sometimes it sounded like it was backfiring. Then the engine started making a whining sound. The car sounds really, really bad. Any ideas??

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak somewhere. That will give you stalling, rough idle, seemingly misfiring...etc. Check all the vacuum tubing to your intake. Use a stethescope around the intake manifold and everything that leaves it.

Well, there is a vacuum hose that just hangs there. I never noticed it until I removed the stock airbox. My friend has the exact same one hanging there on his modded 96 Max. Its been hanging there for that last few months without any problems. never thought anything of it.

It should not be a vacuum hose then... maybe just the breather hose that we all wonder about at some point. All vacuum lines coming from the intake manifold should connect somewhere...
