are you talking about manual or auto?

in manuals I beleive it's impossible.

I shifter into park in my 90' maxima(don't ask) it made the same TACK TACK TACK TACK TACK TACK sound, and then couple weeks later my tranny blew.

Re: Re: Ever shifted into Reverse while driving?

Yeah...i've done it a couple times.
All on rental cars.

It just makes a "click, click, click, click" sound...and slows down FAST!

When it gets too slow (couple mph) it "catches" and the wheels lock up.

My friend did that with his 93 Grand Am, He saw a police officer so he decided that would be the best way to slow down the car. No real side effects and that was like 3 years ago. Iv'e seen people throw a 2K2 Maxima from reverse to drive that just makes them sit there and smoke alot!

Ive done it in Need for Speed 4. The cars tires smoke up nicely and you can do crazy 360s.

When I was younger my family was on a trip in the good ol '88 Nissan Stanza. I was asleep and hit the shifter with my foot and knocked it into neutral. My dad thought it had been knocked into 2nd gear and put it into Reverse accidently without looking. It made a nasty ticking noise, but everything was fine. And the car still runs great to this day. That car is 14 years old and the only thing that's needed replacing is the alternator.. go nissan!

I guess that's what you get for getting an automatic ferrari/porsche...

I did it on my old cavalier auto. It stalls, no problems.

ON my 5spd max, I can try to put it into reverse while driving. I just tried to see if it would go, i never put it in gear. Its weird, if your in 5th and try to push down to reverse, you cant. But if youre in neutral, you can go into reverse, so all be careful. It made that grinding sound like missing a gear does. I did it to test, but very gently, just wanted to see if it would move into that position.

It will not engage

In a manual transmission the reverse will not be engaged because of the dog teeth in the gears. Check this link it's really cool

http://www.howstuffworks.com/transmission3.htm

The same site contains info on automatic transmissions.

btw, a few of the porsches were auto's. the ferarri's were not! it is possible to throw it into reverse while going a couple mph, but other than that, i doubt it. i don't think they make auto ferarri's anyway

My friend's dad did that while going down a hill. He decided to shift into neutral to save gas. He held the button and missed N and went into R. The car jerked, clicked a couple of times then turned off. The car still drives now, but it takes like 3 seconds to get into D from P.

I did the same exact thing...
I was coming off the freeway and half-asleep. I was supposed to shift into Neutral, but accidentally put it in Reverse. My engine died... I was sooo relieved that the engine died instead of a ka-boom!

I shifted into reverse at 30mph in my last car. A 93 Ford Taurus. Automatic of course. Anyway, the engine just shut off and all the dashboard warning lights came on. I pulled over and turned the key to off, and then started it back up. Everything was fine except my heartbeat. Scared the crap out of me.

i did it on my first max by mistake (5 speed converted). It made this nasty rip sound but didn't stall or anything. I mean if your foot is on clutch, how can u stall? I put it in halfway hearing that sound and took it out. Not sure what would happen if u put it allt he way in...

i did it with a 93 astro van while doing like 45 mph. I was ****ed at my boss (it was a company vehicle)and i was shifting from OD to D to 1 to 2, and i went past neutral into reverse. The tranny didn't have a chance to shift into reverse, i dropped it back into D before it caught. I damn near **** my pants when it happened though.

I did it in an auto '89 Ford Tempo on the highway. It clicked really fast then the front wheels caught and I spinned around and was facing back but still going forward with the front wheels locked. I hit the breaks cause there was nothing else I could do and the car spun sideways, and I hit the front fender on the gard rails and scraped to a stop. Called a recker to get the metal from the fender off of the metal of the gard rail. Drove back home with nothing more than a mashed fender and broken headlight. Seat belts really do work.

Never. 5 speed its impossible unless you have a 00 celica gts 6 speed, those you can do it ( not supposed to though), some old hag did and had a lawsuit and now you cant do it on 00 up models of celicas.

The only way id shift into reverse in an auto is if my brakes failed, my e braked burned out and i coudlnt throw my anchor out the window and was looking to stop in a real big way.

seriously though, that grinding noise is an adrenaline pumper. i've never tried to do this in an auto vehicle but on a manual one it should not cause any damage as long as you don't presistently try to force it into reverse.

but i've had my mom slam the jeep into parking several times while wanting to shift into 3rd (her car was manual back then so i guess the habit kicked in). it was bad..

It's my favorite thing to do, go w0t, hit 10 psi with the sc, and pop that baby into reverse, i love that grinding noise...

P.S. What's even better is boosting in reverse, slam it into drive, boost summore and then back into reverse.... you can tell that the car really likes it

P.S.S. I will not be held responsible for any people actually dumb enough to do these things.

Yeah, I was going to say that I remember reading on howstuffworks that it's impossible to do with a manual, but it looks like someone beat me to it.

I do it every so often when parallel parking, I pull up, but I don't wait till I come to a complete stop and grind when I *try* to put it in reverse.
