dont waste your money on 17's, when we all know 17's are way too small on a maxima.

If you think about it for another $300-500 you can have 18's!!

Yes they are too small. I have 18"s and they are too small. They look massive but thanks to the 4X4 spacing Nissan left the moment you mount them on your car they look like 16"s

I think 18's look better myself, but i have been researching this for sometime on the .org and it seems that the loss of speed going from 17" rims to 18" rims is something to consider also. If you care more about looks, go with 18" or 19" or 20", but if you care more about speed go with 15" or 16" or 17".

Me I care about both, so I think I have finally decided to go with 17" rims they are middle of the road on looks, speed, and $$$.

 

I totally aggree. I like the look of 18's better, but unless I get centerline forged, my wheels will be 17's.

 

the good thing about the 4th gen body is that it really isnt that big ( compaired to a 5th gen ) I have 17s on mine, that is as small as i would go for after market, however on the 5th i would only go as small as 18s

 

racing hart z5000 look good on a maxima. I think somebody on the .org has them in either 18 or 19. Most people regret getting 17's instead of 18's. I regret not getting 19's. If I were you I would put out the extra money and get 18's. How many of us really go racing everyday on the streets and on the track. If you want to race buy some slicks. Your isn't that much slower with 18's that a corolla or a civic will beat you.

 

For whatever its worth, I've read many threads saying people wished they got 18s instead of 17s. Also some say they want 19s instead of 18s. But I've never heard anyone say "I wish I got 17s intead of my 18s".

So in my opinion, yes, too small. As ny96max said, the incremental cost is not too much.

 

Whalentire has good wheel/tire packages....

For Example, the Enkei RS6 with Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 712 tires in a 235/45-17 was just $740....the 18" version is $1036...

About $300 difference... That is 40% more than the 17's. So, the marginal cost is quite high. The actual price difference may not b e in your opinion, but paying 40% more for a wheel that is just 5% bigger is not an economically sound decision.... (I have a masters degree in accounting.... )

But hey, if you like the 18's better and have the money, go for it!!

 

I am looking at 17" wheels. Could someone with 17" wheels please post a pic? I want to see how good (or bad) it looks.

Look in my profile for 17" pic. I don't regret them at all. Would I rather have 18"? Maybe, but I am satisfied with what I got.

Different style 17's will give off different images. What type of look are you going for?

 

Uh... well, I don't know what you'd call the look I'm "going for," but I do like the Konig Tantrums. I just don't know if going from $680 (17") to $900 (18") is really worth it for just the extra inch.

Cool. Straight spokes with minimal lip will make the wheel look larger. Tantrums in 17" don't look small at all.

 

Awesome. I was hoping I wasn't going to have to spend that extra money. So, now I just have to wait a few weeks, and then wheels here I come! (just bought my springs and struts, so I want to get those put on first and see how it looks with my SE wheels).

 

I have 17's stock 2k2 SE rims and I'm going to 18" Enkei. Like fst96se said, Whalen has some awesome deal on 18" Enkei's. I was really happy with my 17's.....for awhile.... but with the car lowered AND the body kit, the car just doesn't look "right" still. I'm just debating whether to go with 18" RS6 or CDR9. If you are really really into performance (not saying I'm not) and want to squeeze every ounce out of your car, then yeah go ahead with 17's, but like my OEM SE rims, they are pigs already, so Enkei 18's are actually lighter than my 17's right now.

 

If I had 17" stock, well then I would not but 17" aftermarket wheels. Since my stockers were 15" I was thrilled going to 17".

Since I've been bitten by this modding "bug" nothing ever seems good enough. There is always something I would rather have. I just have to leave well enough alone or I will go bankrupt!!!

 

Well to undo the 4x4 look get some lower springs or coilovers, the money ya save on buy 17s instead of 18s can be put towards some lowering spgings or some coilovers if ya dont have em alredy. I currnetly have 16s on mine cause they were the best price FREE. But i plan on getting a set of 18s for my car some Volk TE 37s. And have my stock 15s with some nitto 555r for the drag strip, hehe

If you ask for people's advice about something as subjective as rims, you're going to get 300 different responses.

 

17's do not work with stock height at all. if your gong for spend get 17's ande lower it 2". if not get 18's and lowr it like 1.2-2" and it will look good. if you dont have the money for 18's then get 17 with about a 225/45/17 on teh tire size that ill feel up the wheel well more. i konw because i have had all of them. when i had my 17's with a 205/40/17 and stock height they looked like 14's but then after i lower it 2 inchs it looked better but i still wanted 18's but i knew it would slow me down.(8.4 in the 1/8 on 17's) i never did get a time on the 18's though.but nitrous took my stage two clutch and my trany so i dont spray anymore. im looking for 18's or 20's now.(its in the shop getting trany and air bags but on steel wheels).theres the problems i ran into. hope i coudl help.

they only give the car a "stock" look
dont stand out much..
but..
the downside of 18s.. at least to me is:

-more $$$
-130$-200$ per tire
-easier to damage
-tires wear out quicker
-less all season capabilities
-heavier and therefore slower

difference in area = 109.95
percent more this is than 17s = %12

So yes, I agree that the marginal cost is higher, and may outweigh the increased size you benefit from. As for making an "economically sound" decision, tell me the economic benefits of buying new rims at all. I'm pretty sure your regular rims work just fine.

Also consider the marginal cost should you later decide 17s aren't big enough. You then have to take a loss on selling the 17s plus buy the 18s.

Radius is the distance from the center of the wheel to the edge....diameter is the distance from one end of the wheel to the other.
It actually comes out to be the same percentage though. Just remember the difference between radius and diameter.

pi(17/2)squared=226.865
pi(18/2)squared=254.34
Difference equals about 12%

I suggested the diameter of the wheels was 5% different. Not the area. Good point though, but still, not convincing.

I will reiterate my prior point though....if you want to do it, do it. You need need buy then talk. Enough of your "well I am gonna get (insert whatever expensive mod you can think of here)..."

Whalentire.com actually has the 17" tantrums for $150 each, total of $600 and the 18" tantrums for $171 each, or $684 for the set for the 18x7.5's....the 8" wide ones are $197 each for a total of $788

17's are about standard, nothing i would complain about. If you have your car for sporting/racing, 17's are perfect. If you trying to floss chrome and all, they too small, especialy for a maxima. I would go with atleast 18's for flossing.
