I need reasons why a 1997 SE Maxima is better than a 2000 GXE or SE Altima
My mom is buying me a car soon. I told her that I want a 97 SE Maxima, but she is considering of buying me a newer car, (not a maxima!)with less miles. She is worried about the maintaince of the Maxima. I have tried to explain to her that even though the 97 Maxima would average around 75,000 miles, it would still run just as well as say a 2000 car. I need reasons to convince her that the Maxima is the better deal.

i understand a little why this might aggrivate some people, but if you don't have anything nice to say don't be an a-hole and scare off people who joined our site and are interested in the one things this site is about. stop bashing newbies cuz it aggrivates you, get over it and ignore it. eventually people will understand. i'm sure all of you weren't experts and didn't know all the rules right away, granted they should search and read up on things on their own first, but play nice.
MaxmiumPower
search for reviews on all the cars she looks at and make sure you don't get ripped off. the maxima won't let you down if it's been taken care of and regularly maintained. watch out for the lemons as with all cars. goodluck

More power, more room, better looks. If shes concerned about the mileage I'm sure you can find a 97 w/ low miles. I'd assume the reliability would be similar for both cars. What's a 2k Altima go for? As far as the Max's reliability its one of the best. Show her a consumer reports or something.

Come on MaximumPower! It shouldn't be that hard. Tell her it is a very reliable car (go get some reviews), with an awesome engine (which magazine calls the VQ the best engine 10 years running?).
I'd also mention that it's more luxurious than the Altima, and should hold it's value better. A 97 SE Maxima has a better crash test rating than a 2k Altima. It is also bigger.
A good selling point would be your access to resources concerning the Maxima. (Namely this board) Wait...we're mostly mod freaks, that might scare her

Suggest the insurance cost differances...
The slightly lower (I'd guess) rates for a 97 vs a newer Max or Altima should help convince her. BTW, the 2.5 Altima is nice ride too, not a V6, but for you - the price is right. And if she insists on a used 5th gen Max - what the hell, you could do a lot worse.
Your'e lucky.

Pull out the cars issue of Consumer reports. The 4th Gen Max is listed as above average reliability and a recommended buy. I don't have the mag in front of me, I am not sure if the Alti is on the list. If the crash protection on the Max is better than the Alti that would definatly be a good argument.
I wish somebody would buy me a car

I just bought a 97 maxima. I've been looking for 5sp 4th gen for under $10k and less than 100k. Lemme tell u...after looking for 2 years, it's a biotch. I finally found the car I wanted and it was cheap! 97 max gxe 5sp, 97k for $6100 (thanx to SweetSound2000 for the lookout!)
3 months ago, I desparately needed a car cuz my Volvo died. I test drove a 2001 Altima SE 5sp, most options except abs. It was a nice car, but not as quiet, luxurious, roomy as a 4th gen Max. Don't get me wrong on the engine either...it'll do low 16s if needed, but I needed more power. Out the door price with 64k miles was $13k (and still included some warantee)
If it's a decision between 2nd gen Altima and 4th gen Maxima (assuming $ and milage is the same), get a maxima. Wards says 97 max is one of the top 10 most reliable cars, so u can't go wrong there. With the Altima, it's solidly built, but u get so much more with a Maxima.
