4th gen thermostat problem

i was wondering if the car overheating might be due to the thermostat getting stuck, the heater is also not working, it is blowing cold air set all the way up on 85 degrees. would the thermostat cause this and if so, this sounds like a pain in the **** to fix, is it relly as bad as it sounds. i have been told by other people that it should be easy. and if a novice mechanic can not do this what is the approximate price i am looking at any help would be appreciated, thans

If your car is over heating and your heat is blowing cold air, you have no coolant in it!!!

I agree... look for a leak in hoses or the radiator (or coolant in the oil...ouch!)
