Grand Cherokee??

I got a 98 Se 5spd ( bone stock ), and the other day a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited pulls up on the right. So i figure what the he*l. We went even to 60, and then a parked car on the right side broke the race. Man, those cars are pretty fast, that is for their size and weight. Anybody else raced one of those before? By the way, a y-pipe and maybe an intake would have helped.

Re: Grand Cherokee??

You gotta be kidding me! You're a stick shift and it was that close? One tried to drag race me for my lane. We were on a road that ALWAYS has parked cars on the side of the road every other light or so. He was about 2-3 cars back, and cut to the right lane so that he could pass us. I knew exactly what he was going to do. So when it went green, both me and the 3 series behind me both made sure he wouldn't get passed either of us. And honestly, it wasn't even that close. By 60 km/h or about just under 40 mph, I was easily ahead of him, and it became more of a race between him and the 3 series. Needless to say, he didn't pass either of us. About two or three lights later, he cut me off from the left lane. So at the next red light, I opened me window and told him to "try it again" with a big grin. With the light still red, just to intimidate, I gave him a little burnout while he revved his engine back at me. I absolutely SMOKED him. Right off the line, he got about a foot off of me, but literally within a couple car lengths, I was in front, and pulling away strong. By the time I shut it down, I was going about 100km/h or about 60 mph, and was easily ahead by many car lengths. At the next red light, I told him, "you wanna go again? I can do this all day against your sorry ***." He replied with a "yah yah." When it went green, he took off hard, I took off normally assuming all was done and over with, and just to **** him off, I ripped it in first gear, and smoked him, only to slow back down to speed limit, and watch him angrily speed off.

I am by no means proud to whip the Grand Cherokee Limited, but he had it coming.

Have you ever had your car clocked? You really should. If you aren't getting 15 flats, you should start looking at things like plugs, filter, knock sensor, etc. A stock SE 5 spd should be pulling 15 flats with a decent to good driver. I pull slightly better at about 14.65 on average with my intake, and high 14.7's (basically 14.8 flat) without it (times were in about mid 20 degree, mid 70's farenheit weather, with about 65% humidity at about sea level). About 3-5 guys on the org have pulled sub 15's on bone stock SE 5 spds, so it is definetly within the car to be able to do that time. So if you are driving it right, you should look into problems with your car.

I'm not a bad driver, but i'm no mario andretti. I am thinking about changing my plugs, but not just yet. Also, 0- 60 a stock max(98) should take about 7.1 sec( nissan claims ). The grand Cherokee about (7.2 - 7.5) Motortrend, Car and driver, any other magazine. And i know, these tests are not very accurate, like u said it depends on how hard u drive it ( double cluching).

Those things have massive amounts of low end torque. My step dad has a Wrangler and it takes off from a stand still, but if you try passing someone going 65 mph it takes forever.

double clutching??? are you saying you double clutch when you shift gears? that would make you somewhat slower...

and i think a 5 speed 98 max should be about 6.7 seconds 0-60. if you cant beat a grand cherokee, something is definetely wrong

i agree, you should have spanked a grand cherokee, they are built for torque........the I-6 is sluggish while the V-8 provides a little more umph off the line, but if it was a 6, then your car got some problems.................

my mom has a 98 5.2 v8 and that things drives like a bat out of hell im telling you. I cant tap the fast and i get whiplash. Its fun too when your friends are sleepy in the car and are dozing off, just tap the gas and you see the deer in the headlights look in their eyes, funny as hell. By the way the 98 5.2 and 5.9 V8's were faster than the new 99+ I think the 5.9 was like 6.1 sec to 60mph

i was waiting for the day someone would bring this up. Do Cherokee owners love pushing their suvs against a max? Everytime i see a CHerokee with an agressive looking driver coming up, i know it's gonna want to haul *** and "try" to show me something. It's a weird occurence. Not even GT stangs, or z28 camaros or even highly modded integras pull as much of that macho crap around me as cherokees do...weirdness
