Pecking Sound Help Me!

I have a 96 Nissan Maxima and when I first bought it the car did not do this, but for some reason it has a pecking or knocking sound over rough roads. Can someone tell me if this is the wheel barings or what, also need to know what kind of brakes will not squeek the brakes are new and the car only has 96000 miles on it please help me.

Thanks
neal

If you think it's a wheel bearing, try to listen for the noise as you take a turn because that's when the bearings make most of their noise. You might want to check your suspension and make sure that everything is secure. As for your break pads, you're probably running with metallic break pads. To get rid of the noise (and lots of break dust), simply upgrade to ceramic pads. They should do the trick.

To check the bearings, lift up the tire to be checked. Place one hand on the top of the tire and one at the bottom. With the top hand pull towards you, bottom hand push away from you. Then visa-versa. There shouldn't be excessive play. This will tell you if your bearings are loose enough to make a rattle sound.

Have you modified the car any? Check the strut assembly mounting bolts as well.
