95GLE w/200,000 miles: Should I buy?

Know a guy who who wants to sell his 95 Gle. We work for the same company, his job intails ALOT of travel'n. Says the miles are mostly highway miles. Considering his job, Im inclined to believe him. I've driven the car, looked in the engine bay, played the radio, popped the trunk ect...ect... Everything looks fine, car drives like mine when I first bought it. Say's he'll give me it for below blue book value. He dosn't know it yet, but Kelly blue book is around 5,400.

My wife needs a car. What do you guys think?

No way I would pay anything close to $5,400 for a max with 200,000 miles. For a couple hundreds dollars more you could get a max with half the miles.

yeah 5400 is a lot...

I think 3500 wouldn't be bad but that if things have been replaced on the car like IE (starter, alternator, water pump) And there is someone in the F/S forum that is selling an engin with 88K on it...might be a good thing to do a swap...Just a thought. Or maybe if you get it cheap buy the engine that Mike is selling on the F/S and when you start having engine problems if any...do the swap.

Here is what I think:

Ask him if it is ok to take it to a garage. If he says yes, take it to someone you can trust. Have the mechanic go through the car. Have the compression checked, the brakes checked, coolant, and other things. Ask the owner when he has done maintenence to the vehicle and ask if he has records. If it has an automatic tranny, see if he has had the tranny fluid changed.

*if* everything check out ok, offer him $3500 for it.

FYI -My Max has 171,000 miles and still runs like a top. I haven't stopped modding it since I bought it. When the engine goes, I plan on getting another one. I know I won't get crap for it if I sell it. So I'm keeping it until it falls apart. I just payed it off so I have to enjoy not having a car payment as long as I can. Those 2002's sure are sweet though. I would love to get my hands on one. I do get tired of my car sometimes, when that happens I usually buy a new mod and enjoy the car all over again. I think that if the car runs good, don't let the high mileage deter you from getting it, just don't pay alot for the it. It should still have alot of life left in it.

as soon as you give him the money, all the duct tape holding the motor in will come loose and it will fall out not worth it, cause your getting it for a low price, but the maintenence will kill ya.

5400???? that's too much. I think kbb.com like stops looking at mileage after a certain amount. I remember doing a test on a 99 with lots of miles and after putting like 160,000 miles or something its price was like the same if a car had 200,000 miles. You can find a better maxima for around that price. With less mileage, don't buy it.

i too would probably run from something with that many miles unless it was a really cheap price. like everyone said, if it checks out, offer him less if you really like the options and everything about it. however.......are we or are we not talking about the VQ? yes we are...it has proven to be a great engine and i'm sure if it's been taken care of has plenty of life left in it.

I seem to be getting a lot mixed opinions on this one, but I think I like the way Mr Cranman thinks I mean it is a VQ right? I know guys who pay 13-16k for a new car that craps out preformance wise before it even gets to 100k miles. This max drove like a champ. Im thinking the gamble would be worth it, especially if I could get it for under 4k. Just need more of your opinions. Anyone know how much a engine swap runs?

Thanks for the compliment . And like you said it's a VQ, I know some out there that have like 250K if it has been taken car of and not raced easy 300k out of the engine. But, as long as you have a trust worthy person doing the engine swap it should run some where between 400-1000...I know that is a big jump, but it all depends on the mechanic. I would personally do it myself...because I don't like paying mechanics. Hope that helps,

-John

BTW if everything but the engine has been replaced then the car should be good to go for another 100K I don't know any VQ that have failed yet (unless they were being boosted to high)...but for just a daily driver I think it isn't bad if you get it around 4K.

I wouldn't NOT buy it if the price was right. If its a one owner and he's dont all the necessary maintenance-you should be ok. Now there is a lot that can happen to a car with high miles so be prepared if it does. But I have seen many cars go a long way with no needed repairs but for regular maintenance. Saw a Chrysler Lebaron with amost 400K on it with original engine and tranny and never had any work done to it.
