Which factory horn is the "main" one?

I'm installing aftermarket horns tomorrow and needto find out which horn is the "main" horn, so I can wire that one to the relay?

Is it the one by the washer fluid tank, or the one out front by the radiator?

Thanks!!

Re: Which factory horn is the "main" one?

We run dual horns. Both horns sound when you press the horn, otherwise you'll hear a crappy tone because you cannot get full range (lo-hi) with just one horn, you need two.

One horn is mounted inside the engine compartment (next to washer fluid tank) so it cannot be easily disconnected by reaching behind the bumper/grille. This is to help meet the anti-theft/alarm requirements.

I think each horn has it's own relay >>

So I would think that it didn't matter which one you wired to the alarm.

Re: Which factory horn is the "main" one?

The one behind the grill is the main horn, the one under the hood is the alarm horn. Leave the alarm horn where it is and install your new horns in place of the one behind the grill. NOTE: There is an additional "dangling" wire with connector by the one horn behind the grill. You can use this to power your second horn. When you wire it up that way you will be using all three horns and have plenty of volume! It worked great on my Hella autobahn horns!

sorry to bring up a semi old thread...

anyway, i am going to get the hella supertone twin horns, and want to know about which horn to replace.

this thread says two contradicting things:
1. one horn is high, one is low and they both sound for regular horn honking and alarm

2. one is for regular honking, one is for alarm

which is it and how should i best hook up the new horns, i think i would like to hide the new horns behind the grill if i can, but i dont know if the wiring will work there, or if they will fit. and regardless of which horn i replace, should i leave the other factory horn installed?

well to finally resolve this, when i was installing my horns this past week i tested both leads for the horns and the only one that worked was the one in the front behind the grill.

so i hooked it up to that and now both my horn and ararm work through my air horns.

so use the lead for the front horn behind the grill.

That is strange that only one works. BOTH of my horns honk. One is a low and the other a high tone. If it matters I have a 95GLE.

pull out both horns, or else your airhorns and stock horns will sound at once and sound like crap!

you can get the relays input lead from the horn closest to the motor. As for the other horn just unplug it and tuck the wire away.

'closest to the engine' do you mean by the radiator or by the washer fluid?

Does anyone have instructions on how to install the Supertone Horn Kit (with relay)? I purchased one from autosupermart.com part: 85315. I'm not sure if this is the one everyone else has purchased. I tried installing mine today without the relay and it didnt work Any help would be appreciated.
