Anyone know if its louder than the S/C?

it makes a hissing type of sound...im sure you've heard on turbo'd cars in your area.
A healthy turbo shouldn't make *any* noise whatsoever. An old turbo may make a whiny noise if one of the bearings is worn. If the turbo system has a blow-off valve in place, then yes there will be a PSSSHHH sound when the driver lets off the gas.

I think your wrong, you can make a healthy turbo whistle under boost, It all depends on whats done to the car.

one day i was driving next to this jet black wrx. those things are turboed, and it made a pssshhh sound when he was shifting. i hear that in gran turismo too, that's supposed to simulate the real thing, right?
mmmmmm, it sounded so nice...
i want one.

I think you would have to get the BOV anyway, or a wastegate.. obviously backpressure is not good on the engine..

I have also heard that a bypass valve is better since it routes the air back into the system so the MAF is accounting for all the air correctly.
Also, the bov and bv let off back pressure on the turbine of the turbo, right?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought a wastegate was what controls the boost. I know some wastegates let exhaust into the atmosphere before the turbo, but most the noise comes from the turbo spooling up or the blow off or bypass valve.

Ouch... sorry if my post was less than informative. I'll say this in my defense:
When I bought my '90 RX7 turbo, I could hear some whiny noise above 3K RPM, figured it was normal. Well after owning it for a while I was convinced I needed more power so I bought a Racing Beat exhaust and unknowingly started damaging my engine cuz I was running lean (pinging). When compression tests revealed that the engine was shot, they also took the turbo apart and found that it was pretty badly worn (7 years old mind you). Anyway, when I got everything repaired/replaced, got the car back and the turbo made NO noise.
An ex-girlfriend of mine had an '88 Celica all-trac turbo, man that car was a blast to drive, and guess what... no whiny turbo.
Also, I buddy of mine used to have a '95 300ZX TT, and those turbos where silent too. He has moved on to an Audi S4 (rich bastard)... haven't had a chance to ride in that yet...
So I guess there are some noisy turbos out there, sorry I generalized based on my experiences.

As far as noise goes, turbos don't have to be loud.
From my experience, a turbo will changw in volume with the amount of boost it is producing.
My roomate owns an Audi A4 1.8t. I have ridden in it every stage of modding he has done. At stock it was silent only producing 7psi. With the APR chip at just over 1bar on stock turbo, you could slightly hear the spool up. Now with the PES stageIII turbo kit, the spool up is very loud and the bypass valve sounds similar to a BOV.
So it all depends on the set up and all the factors in the turbo system.

Now let me give my spill. When I went to the track and raced this Supra w/the large single Turbo upgrade, I could hear that sucker squealing loud as hell as he try to catch me.
(yes I was ahead of him since it was a young 15 yr old kid driving). Thats the only time I got a chance to hear a Turbo spool up. To hear a supercharger spool up listen very closely to this video. You can hear my SCer make a psssssssst noise as it spools up. This is a video of Baggs racing his friend. Enjoy
