Hey auto guys, VI works well...14.77@93.5 mph

I just got back from the track today and I am extremely pleased with my car. My new mods are in my sig. The variable intake is great. Lets just say that my slowest time of the day was still faster than my old record. Conditions were good, but not great, temp about 65 with 70% humidity. My new best goes as follows:

RT .382
60 2.260
330 6.279
1/8 9.543
mph 77.12
1000 --
1/4 14.777
mph 93.51

my other bests on another run were:
RT .662
60 2.274
330 6.293
1/8 9.55
mph 77.62
1000 --
1/4 14.783
mph 93.54

I ran several other times, 14.805, 14.841, 14.859, 14.875. Every one of my 60 ft times was a 2.2x also, so I was fairly consistent. The good news is that I have all of these runs on video, and will try to get those on the internet by wednesday, and I will scan the timeslips as well, when I get back home. All of these runs were made with full interior, the only things removed were the spare and jack. I was on my stock 15" wheels with 205/50-15 kuhmo tires. I believe that when cold weather gets here, that I can hit a 14.5 if I can get traction in the cold.

How in gods name are you trapping 77 in the 1/8th in an auto? You sure you dont have a little 50 shot in there ? I thought autos lagged down low compared to 5spds but were pretty comparable up top. Your timeslips indicate the exact opposite. What gives?

You are just mad, because for that brief second that I was at peak power in second gear, I would be pulling on you...j/k. Well, at the end of the 1/8th mile, I am at peak power in 2nd gear, which is the best gear for the auto. At the end of the 1/4 mile, it is not pulling as hard because I am only at like 5600rpm, and third gear is pretty weak, it goes up to like 130 mph, and I am only at 93mph when I cross the line. I have discovered this in racing too, I do really well from a stop through 2nd gear, but if it is close at that point, I am getting walked in third, it is just too broad a gear. I like going to the 1/8th mile track, becuase my car is pretty fast there, it just falls on its face after that.

yeah, it was actually funny because I was racing a LS1 firebird and I knew I was going to get killed, so I tried to tree him so I would be ahead for a little bit . I actually ended up beating him, because he missed a gear and then let off, as you will see on the video when I get it done.

The variable intake has no benefit if you don't manually shift, I actually had a hard time not hitting the rev limiter in first gear though, because it winds up so fast.

Those ET/MPHs are awesome!!!! Congrats.

BSwithTF (Travis) is gonna be ****ed because that's what his car should be running. I've been telling him he should be getting at least 93mph in the 1/4 mile with his VI. He running no quicker or faster in the 1/4 mile with the VI. IMO, I don't think his butterflies are opening all the time.

How is your MAP baro switch wired to open? Are you using a relay or not?

I got rid of the relay a few days ago, and its works every single time now, the MAP switch has constant power, and the ground is from the rpm switch.

Damn, I'm boosted + MEVI and my best time to date is a 14.71.

And my 60' was better also. (2.19)

WTF!?!?

Could my speaker box in the trunk really be making me lose that much time!?!?

Looks like my next Mod will be stereo redesign with a quick release mechanism, so I can take that puppy out.

96sleeper: how is your test pipe working out. i believe it is illegal, how does it work out for emmisions, just like the ypipe?? and did you see any significant gains??

Your 1/8th speed is really impressive. You are trapping in the 1/8th faster then the fastest N/A 4th gens on this board. I think I've actually got the fastest N/A 1/8th trap, 77.9, and usually they are in the high 76s to mid 77s, with my removed weight for the track even. That's awesome. I didn't know you had a G-Force ECU, it must be doing the trick down low and in the midrange eh?

I know man. It's frustrating as hell. Good 60' time, lightweight 15" rims on, spare removed, and the best I could get in 15 runs was 14.7!!! (granted, one 10" sub, an amp rack, and 2 amps in the trunk)

But I've Dynoed more than once, and my numbers are always consistantly in the 260's.....

It blows my mind. I gave up months ago trying to figure it out. I'm just going to do a manual conversion.

Re: Hey auto guys, VI works well...14.77@93.5 mph

Congrads on the great runs, I knew those 205/50s would own hehe. I did a quick cartest sim with 205/50-15 tires on a VI + bolt ons auto. My ETs are within 0.05 of yours and my trap is about 0.5-1mph higher. I believe I know why the car is so strong in the 1/8, according to cartest you should be turning right at 6200-6300rpm right at the 660' mark. It also shows that if you were to cut a 2.0x 60' the car would run 14.4-14.5s. That means you need a higher stall torque convertor. Make it so and mid 14s are yours .

I know, I posted a response earlier about trying to tree the LS1 that I was racing...so I wouldn't get beat so bad. Why is it that all of the good runs are redlights...not that it matters.

VI was set to 5000rpm. I was running so consistent that I should have played around with changing it, just to see if it is the best. I have 90,000 miles on my car, all the fluids are synthetic, plugs are fairly new NGK, everything else maintenance-wise has been changed at some point.

I have a few more tricks up my sleeve...and also remember that my track stays open year round, even in the freezing cold weather. If I can get traction on one of those days, I could see a 14.5@95+mph. I ran 93 mph last january, with less mods, and my usual trap was around 90.5mph. I know that some people think that it is cheating to run in weather like that...but I only race to have fun, and its not my fault that the track stays open.

It ain't cheating, bro, you're just lucky to have a track staff that realizes everyone wants to race in cold weather. My track closes at the end of October and even then, they won't open unless it's in the upper 40s AND sunny

I'm glad to hear your VI works flawlessly without the relay. I'm still waiting for my RPM switch to be replaced by Harlan. I doubt I'll get a replacement back by the time my track closes on the 30th. He's out of town until 10/18.

For some reason, the 95-96 cars don't get a CEL with a test pipe, but the 97-99 do I believe. I don't think that there are many gains from this mod though.

cool. If I had a lot of money lying around I'd give it a try. I keep aving around on how much effect I think this mod really has, other than evening out the tq curve, but I am too poor for this stuff.

Yes, it works on 95-99, and yes, it lines up perfect, except th EVAP canister, which there are no mounting bolts for on the new manifold. It doesn't need them anyway.

You can learn how to do it by following the chapters in the Chilton's and hayes manuals on Manifold Removal/Replacement.

www.cyberhub.net/intake

I have 2 spots open on my GD. (See "2nd MEVI GD" in the GD Forum)
