Vibrations while braking...

I have a 96 gxe and the car vibrates terribly when braking.
I can feel it on the handles and on the pedal.
At first, when I got the car, I assumed that the vibes were being caused by the ABS that the previous owner said the car had.
But today, I almost re-ended the car in front of me.
Guess what? Tires where smokin...
I don't think that's one of ABS features...

Whatever, I don't care. I didn't want ABS in the first place.

But now, my question is, what's causing the Vibration?
Is anyone else having this problem?

Also, I'm not sure if this is quite related, but when I'm braking while coasting (automatic tranny) at 2~5mph, I can hear a ticking(low picthed) on the front driver side wheel. It ticks per rotation.

Any input is welcomed. Thanks Guys, your the best.

I don't know what ABS feels like since I never had it in any of my cars.. but the way it supposedly works is, it kicks back the brake pedal giving your wheels more room to rotate instead of just locking them up and causing you to loose control or traction...

it is supposed to "pulsate"

but the vibration you describe sounds more severe..
does it pull to the side or anything while you do this?
does it do this under moderate braking or just on really hard braking?

i'd check the condition of the rotors..
if the surface is really uneven, it is possible they are causing the vibration and need to be resurfaced or replaced.

I have a 97 SE with ABS. ABS isn't really like the pedal pulsating. It is more like jaggedly pulsating. My friends car has an ABS problem, it sounds kinda like yours. I dunno. Good luck!

yeah, the first thing to check is the rotor. take it out and check if uneven tickness.

Exactly, maybe even try swapping them out with cheaper rotors from like autozone or what not and new pads to see how that works out. The vibration might just end with that.

Cool, I'll have my brakes checked right away.

Oh, by the way, I think ABS is really cool and a life saver.
It saved our family once in Lake Tahoe. The road was quite slippery from rain that early morning.

Anyway, for me, it's just one less thing that I need to worry about maintaining. More realistically, I just don't have one.

Thanks Guys~

Yeah, you rotors are warped.
Get them resurfaced or just get new ones.
If you replace your rotors, it is a good idea to replaced the brake pads also.
