hmmm..RWD vs FWD.
The Z has 2 TB's, 2 timing belts that need to be replaced.
Luckily they're both bullet proof.
The VG is easier to work on.

Closest thing to a comparison chart I could find...

http://www.freshalloy.com/cars/nissa...n_engines.html

Having both, I should know more but haven't done a lot of mods yet (on the engines).

Yep Ours is better and theirs is very similiar to the VG in 89-94 Maxima's. It is so many differences to mention!

Hey, is this for real? Or are you just kidding? I was always curious as to the differences in transverse vs longitudinal engines in terms of efficiency.

Why is this, that transverse makes more power than longitudinal?

Well ya know, I keep wondering if the lack of "oomph" off the line with my 300ZX (non-turbo) vs. my Max was just RWD pushing vs. FWD pulling. I think they're about the same weight (both are relatively heavy). My wife won't face off with me in my Z and her in the Max, so it's literally "seat of the pants" comparison that makes my Max feel quicker....

What is the hp rating of the '95 VQ30DE? VG30DE is 222.

The fact that the engine is closer to the drive wheels makes it more powerful.

Interesting...Therefore less energy lost to turning a longer driveshaft and more power to the wheels. I was always under the impression that RWD cars had greater mechanical efficiency. Gues not.

Thanks for answering my question.

I have both motors as well just as you. The VQ has more low end torque, where the VG's is near non-existent. You have to get the VG at 4000+ and that's where it's power truly lies. In this area at a roll the VG (all stock on both motors) will absolutely kill the VQ. But the VQ is more fun for just driving around town from red light to redlight. It does feel more powerfull, but that's just the initial feeling. As we've seen before the VQ dies after a certain engine speed. Luckily the MEVI helps combat that.

As for the FWD vs RWD stuff, that could easily be disputed on both sides. I'm not picking either side as I own both and this is a forum dedicated to FWD owners. The only way to tell is to do stand a lone engine dynos...meaning no tranny, no body, no frame, just the motor and compare the parasitic loss of the two. You would have to measure the differences in percentage and not in HP since most likely these will be two different motors and that alone is enough to make the test completely invalid. There's got to be some good documented research on this somewhere.

The Maxima weighs about 400 lbs less than your Z car, that makes a BIG difference. A stock 5spd Max will easily outrun a stock 5spd Z (non-Turbo of course). The Max is lighter and has more low end torque.

I hate magazine racing, but I have never seen an NA Z32 post anything close to a 6.6 second 0-60 time...or a 15.2 1/4 mile...stock...

Oh, and the VQ30DE is rated at 190hp.

I dunnoh. Even passing from 60mpg in the VQ feels quicker than the VG. My thought was the tranny (both autos) and was considering the ALC mod on the Z tranny to make it respond better. The Max has always downshifted for me at the intuitively right places (i.e., when I wanted it to) which is why I love driving it. I have to kick the Z harder to get it to downshift for those lightning-fast passes...

EXACTLY! just like i said, it has to been in the upper rpm's to be in it's power band. Nissan overgeared the car for emmisions reasons. You could get a different ratio diff for the rear to make the lack of low end torque more useable. But that's why the max feels more powerfull, the power is more readily available. It's all about the conditions and environment you're in.
What are max's running 0-60 and 1/4? Let's also make the comparisons accurate with weather conditions, altitude and regional location(this affects what formulation of fuel you can get)

why do u wanna know this, just to know? There arent many ( none that i can think of ) 300ZX parts u can put on a maxima, however the 89-92? Maximas were VG engines, if anything the parts r more likly to fit those rather then our VQs. But again parts off the 350Z might fit the 2k2+ Maxima because they are both NA VQs

looks like the times for max vs na z are pretty close
i found what i could and averaged them. i got my stock max speeds from here in the 1/4 section and i got the z times from z32.org and twinturbo.net
Z = 1/4 15.4
3210 lbs
7sec - 0-60

max = 1/4 15.4
don't know the weight, i'm sure you guys do, i still a max newbie
couldn't find a 0-60 that fit the category. it's a real interesting comparo

It could be the 250-300lb difference . I have a dyno of a stock NA z32 it dynoed 180rwhp/170rwtq. From 1700-4200rpm it averages around 160rwtq, then it peaks 170rwtq @ 4500 and slowly drops off to 150rwtq from 5700-6200rpm, now it starts to trail off. The VG's torque curve is simular to a MEVI VQ's curve, however the VG drops off around 6400rpm quicker.

why didnt they make their "sports car" any quicker than their 4 door lux? Max's are better in every aspect...now the new z on the other hand.....

the post previous to this one is absurd, try the twin turbo for some serious performance. I have a 95 max se 5spd and a 95 300zx na 5spd. the maxima is by far faster due to more low end torque adn the redisigned engine. having 200 less lbs in the max makes a huge difference. aluminum makes a huge difference in response, and 205 lbs of torque compared to 198 is what should be looked at instead of the 190 hp to the 222 of the max to 300 respectively. rwd can make for some wicked starts if done right. anyways the max engine vs the na 300 engine is no comparison since the new designs of the vq and also since the car weighs less. both cars rule. the end

one HUGE thing you have to look at is the z32 first appeared in 1990, while our 4th gen maximas appeared in 1995. even the 1996 z32 cars were practically unchanged from the 1990 models (cd player and passenger side airbag were the only additions, i think). those five years had worlds to do with why the 4th gen max is faster and "better" than the z32 cars.

but if i had my choice, i would be driving a z32, not my current maxima. and i am a big time maxima fan.

just my two cents.

Your crazy to think that. The Z already has better brakes, more power (more weight too)and probably better performance orentied (sp?) tuned suspension. Also when the Z32 came out it was way quicker than the 3rd gen maxima which was out then. Using your logic would be like comparing a NA Z31 to a 3rd gen maxima. While the 4th gen should "feel" faster, the Z is way more fun to drive. Just looking at the gear ratios, power/weight, aero factor it seems a NA Z32 vs 4th gen would be a drivers race. Cartest shows that in a roll on a 5spd Z32 would pull on a 5spd 4th gen if both cars are stock.

Guys, chill! We're arguing over two GREAT cars!
I just came back from a big Z show in Wilmington, NC and I'm on Z overdose...

I did realize something, however. I'm trying to get my Max to handle like my Z, and my Z (NA 2+2) to accelerate like my Max. Once I put the FSTB and the RSB on my Max, and NOS on the Z, I'll be close!

Thanks for all the input, I understand much more now...
