Question for 5speed owners
Question for 5speed owners
I have a question I hope will be an easy one. Just bought my car a couple months ago, and I have noticed that when comming to a stop, I push in the clutch and my RPMs drop all the way down to 750 or sometimes even lower when rolling to a stop, and then its like the vaccuum or something catches it just in time and it jumps back up over 1000 or so. Not very smooth at all, is this normal, have been driving autos for a long time now. Also on start ups the RPMs rev way high for a few seconds and way slower than I'm used to start to go down. Is this the normal fast idle?, or maybe throttle cable adjusted too tight? My warm idle is at 600 is this fine or is there an advantage to raising it to 750 or 1000, sorry so long, but wanted to drive for a while before asking. Thanks

This does NOT sound normal. Is it like the car feels about to stall and the rpms jump back up? Wonder if it is an O2 sensor or fuel injector. Have you chekced to see if you haver any computer codes? That'd be the first step to see if you have a problem here.

hope that clears all your questions.
Thanks, for the amswers, I understand the pushing in the clutch will make the rpms drop, it just seemed to drop real low when rolling to a stop and then jumping back up to over 1000 rpms before settling back down. I cleaned the throttle body, and have new plugs, also ran the codes and nothing. So for now I'll take it as normal, because it never seems to get low enough to start to stall. I thought maybe a vaccuum issue or throttle cable issue. Thanks for the help!
My car exhibits these exact symptoms when I have my governor switched off, meaning I have the switch flipped so my transmission speed sensor wire is not connected to the ECU. I've never figured out the correlation between transmission speed sensor and idle, but there is obviously some connection. When I flip the switch back to the "on" (stock) position, I have no idle problems. I don't think this is the case with your car, as you have an SE and no governor. Unless by chance you have a bad transmission speed sensor or disconnected wire.
