Pin pointing strange sound under car, rattling

I have been trying to pin point a strange sound for somewhere under my car. Seemed to hear it just to the right of the drivers seat. This sounds starts at about 2500 RPMs usualy and stops around 4500 RPMs. Its a loud rattling sound. I searched and most of the answers seemed to be leading me towards heat shields. So I checked all the heat shields, nothing. But when I was under there I saw that the Y-Pipe had what appeared to be a large hole in the area that looks like woven material, I could see a spring like object under it. Could this hole be the problem. If so I wiouldn't really be too mad, I have been looking to pick up an aftermarket Y-Pipe for some time now, this is just a puash towards that. Any input would be great.

Thanks a lot guys.

The woven part? Sounds like you might be talking about the flex section and if you do have a hole oin it then yes .... You now have an excuse for the aftermarket Y pipes.

Yeah the flex section, the word just wasn't coming to me. And it just looks so much like a woven material. Yeah there is a sizable hole. Looks like I might have to go out and order a WarpSpeed SS Y-pipe.

Well since it won't get here for a little while, is it safe to drive the car around with this problem?

The braided metal is not the actual flexpipe. Rather, it is really just protection for the "spring" part you described. The spring part is the actual flexpipe.

And yes, it is perfectly safe to drive around....except that you would be making our precious air dirty because the flex pipe is before the main cat And, you might start sounding like a Honda fart-can.

But would the wear down of the protective piece be a reason for this annoying sound?

Yes any exhaust pipe leak (even the flex section) will cause a loud loud noise while accelerating.

To pinpoint a sneaky sound under the hood/car get a 3 or 4 foot long piece of fuel line and stick it in your ear. You can aim it at different components to hear if they are making the noises...
