Hello Maxima owners. My name is Brett and I live in Houston and was wondering if anybody had accomplished or heard of a Maxima tranny conversion to stick. I love my car and engine but my SE just does not feel sporty with out a manual transmission.

Thanks In Advance

Your best bet is to > >

Sell your car out right and buy another 97 SE you should actually save money doing this because a 5SD. is worth about $600 less.Since you seem to not have any mods this process would be fairly easy/other the registration and the damn sales tax.If you refuse to do that and really want to keep your max but change it to a five speed then talk it over with your local nissan dealer it will cost thousands though.

Thanks for the response. Your answer is simple but brilliant. That would be the least costly way to do it.
Besides changing the tranny, adding a clutch through the firewall and other things it would be very labor intensive.
Not to mention the programing of the computer chips.

Thanks emax95

i dont know if the Nissan dealer would do something like this even if they do you'd save alot more money if you do it from an independant shop. Besides the Tranny itself, youll need many parts from a 5 speed.
ECU, Wiring harness, Shift linkage, pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder, maybe a new motor mount too, and some other misc parts. Good luck

well, just wondering...

with don's valve body upgrade as well as a level 10 tranny upgrade and a torque converter, would an auto, "stock" vs a stock 5 spd be quicker? i've heard rumors, but what's the deal? i see the advantages to both and would like to keep an auto since my "so-called" gf can not really drive a manual and i rather she not mess up my clutch

AUTO TO MANUAL CONVERSION

I think you'll spend at least $4,000 to $5,000 dollars for the retrofit...

1. Remove auto-trans
2. Install manual transmission
3. Install clutch, cables, and pedal
4. Remove auto transmission computer...
5. Intall interlock harness for clutch inhibitor circuitry
6. Remove interior center console
7. Replace brake pedal.
8. Install 5 speed center console.
9. Install all linkages between gear shift and transmission.

Don't even bother to do this... Just buy a new car...

don't be silly man

it would be far less hassle and money to just sell your auto and buy 5 spd, or trade that bad boy in.

Not to mention that after spending $4 grand, it will NEVER be the same as one that was MEANT to be a 5-speed from the factory.

Sorry for bringing up such an old thread, but i was considering doing the swap because i already have 4k invested in my max. Why would it not be as good as a factory manual, and how much do you think it would cost to buy the parts from a wrecked max in a junkyard?

Consider this

I only know of one person on the board who's done it ..
he's need4pwr and he did it to a 3rd gen.. he's said that it does not feel right and the conversion took him forever..
plus it wasn't worth it..

Why don't you take off the 4K in parts on your max and put them on the new manual max.. people have done that b4..
Thas what i would do ...

Thats still is very expensive because I have to put the stock stuff back on and I have to pay again and spend a lot of time working on the new car. What kind of trade in value do you actually think I would get for my 96 gle. Also I am really used to the gle stuff, can I get all the amenities in a se?
