My Max - -suddenly dies . .

My 95 Max dies every 2 weeks.. Most of the times, when the
engine is cold. The engine just stops.. and then you have
to wait like 2 minutes till it starts again: hesitates
a little bit when it does. . . and then continues to run
perfectly for the entire day / week.

Fuel tank is always full and I have also noticed that it
usually stops running when going downhill, and not accelerating
at all.

What could it be ? Fuel Pump ? Filter ? Fuel lines? fuel
injectors ?

Please Help ! !

THe Brazilian Max

when you say its when your not accelerating, makes it seem like your IAV valve is busted....this happened to me a few months ago...i would be cruising along, and id take my foot off the gas, and the car would stall....it wouldnt do it all the time, but just randomly really....well, i changed my fuel filter, cleaned out my throttle body, and made sure i didnt have any leaks around the intake (have a custom upper intake)

Thanks !

The IACV is located behind the throttle body, has a bunch of sensor connectors on it, and is also connected to the intake manifold.

If you are having hard starts when cold, consider a throttle body clean and testing out your engine coolant temp sensor.

Re: My Max - -suddenly dies . .

Idle Air Control Valve... I believe.

My car was stalling after slowing down and coming to a stop.

I took my Throttle Body and IACV valve off last night and thoroughly cleaned them with TB Cleaner.

You wouldn't believe how black and junked up they were.

I actually disassembled my IACV and cleaned out the inerds... it was pretty bleak inside there too. Just dont remove the 3 screws on the brown piece....there's nothing to clean in there. (and if you decide you want to open that section on it anyways...be careful not to loose the little spring inide).

Put everything back to together and readjusted the Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) about 1:30am last night... No problems when i drove in to work this morning, but hopefully my stalling problems will go away. Let me know if you need some help if you decide to take things apart and clean em up.....

Re: Re: My Max - -suddenly dies . .

Thanks a lot Malumax,

I had that valve cleaned like a month ago, and the
problem stopped. This week.... it started happening again ! !

And. . . it´s exactly the way you described it. Right
after a complete stop. I also noticed that my Idle RPM
is lower and lower every day.

One more thing... Why does it takes so long to start
the car again after it dies? I have to try for like
2 or 3 minutes before it decides to run again.

Regards,

BrazilianMax

I had a very similar problem a few months ago. There is an AUXILIARY Air Intake Control Valve in addition to the main IACV, apparently. Mine had broken and needed replacement- as soon as I had that done the car ran fine again. I brought it to a dealer to have it fixed so I can't tell you where it is, unfortunately.

Also, just to be sure, you might want to check your battery terminals for corrosion. A bad connection there could cause similar problems. Sometimes they get so corroded that even a thorough cleaning with a wire brush is not enough.

Good luck,
Doug

Re: Re: Re: My Max - -suddenly dies . .

I have no idea why it takes a while to start back up....

mine would turn and then it would sound like it was trying to fire at the wrong time.... the car would shake a little bit and then eventually it would fire back up.

Its only been a few days since I did the cleaning.... hasnt stalled since.... but I am gonna wait for a least several more days to before closing the book on this...

I dont know about this Auxilliary valve mentioned above.... but It's worth looking at.. Does anyone have any info on what/where it is?

Are you guys having problems with 5sp. or auto trans, or does it even make a difference? Also, does this IACV throw a code when it begins to malfunction?

I am having a similar problem. When I slow down to a stop, my RPMs start to dip to a little bit under 500 and jump back up to about 600-650. It hasn't died on me yet. So what do you suggest to do? Change fuel filter and clean the throttle body?

How much does a trottle body cleaning cost?

I had the same thing happening to me. Drop to around 500 RPMs and start chugging. It would also die completely after hard runs and I lifted off the throttle. Not good when that hard run is coming up an on ramp! Not a comforting feeling. At any rate, Papasmurf hooked me up and told me to replace the PCV valve. Seems to have done the trick so far. After reading the Haynes Manual, it makes since the PCV would screw up the vaccuum. Just food for thought.

Max ´s still dying...

Hello Folks,

I still having this problem... The car now stalls and then
dies like 3 or more times a day! ! Always a little after coming to a
complete stop.

Had the IACV cleaned twice (It seems to help, but only for a couple
of weeks. . .) Had the fuel PUMP and fuel filters replaced (Also helped, but after a month or so, the problem came back). Dunno
what else to try. . .

Any ideas ? ?

Try cleaning the throttle body intake and adjust the idle. Search if you don't know what this is.
