Airbag deployment

Hi,

Does anyone know or hear stories about airbag in the 95-99 in a crash at certain speed does not open up ?

I dont mean go out and crash your car, but wonder if anyone know at what speed does the airbag open up and does it have to be in a head on collision or not?

Thanks

I was in an Accident recently where my dad rear ended me in my Max. The airbags did not deploy. I was reading about the airbags in the owner's manual last night and it said something along the lines of rear end collisions, side impacts, and low speed/intensity front collisions will not deploy the airbag.

I'm thankful my airbag didn't deploy, that would have just scared the hell out of me and cost me a few thou more to fix. Most cars have low speed impact sensors (low speed indicated the other car that impacts you isn't traveling very fast either), or accelerometers that can determine the magnitude of the impact and based on certain constraints, deploy or not deploy the airbags.

My dad was in a 2000 Volvo S80 T6 (twin turbocharged I-6... sweeeeet), and his airbags didn't go off either, even when he was impacted from behind which ended up blowing out his rear windsheild.

He'll be getting his Volvo back next week, I'll be getting my Max back around Tturkey Day.

It is odd you mention that because one time a kid I knew was in a "accident" at about 3mph. There was no damage to the car he bumped or his, they were at a stop and his foot slipped on him for a sec and he rolled into her.

But the odd thing was that the airbags came out on him. They ended up costing like 500 bucks each to get repacked etc. It was more of a pain because of the price and the punch in the face he got from the bags.

He was in a (my best guess at the year here is) 95 G20.

dude, i don't think the front airbags are supposed to go off if you get rear-ended. call me crazy...

I just said that to imply the severity of his rear impact, but you are correct, they aren't supposed to deploy when rear ended.

Makes sence. If you hit hard enough in the back sending you head and neck flying forward then the bag comes out and snaps it back the other way at the speed it does, it could cause some seious pain.
