Keyless Entry Question

Hello everyone !

I will pick up my 96 GXE Maxima this sunday and I need to find a replacement of the keyless entry because the original owner broke his . I have used the search forum here but I couldn't find if I can use 5th gen Maxima keyless entry for the 4th gen or from other Nissan cars. What's the replacement guideline for this keyless ?

Also, does this work as keyless only or it actually has alarm sensor built in it ?

Thanks !

Have you checked out any of the aftermarket keyless entry/alarm systems?

Nope I haven't. I thought of buying the Nissan remote but again I don't know if I can use use for example the remote from 5th gen, or from any other type of Nissan. I'll have to make sure it will work before I buy it through ebay, right ? Thanks for the reply.

Check forsale section lots of people sell them, you would have to get a version for your year if not i dont know the consequence. All you would have to do when you find one is reprogram it.

I just wanna be clear on my question though, is not where to get it but more on the compatibility side. I need to know if the remote from 5th gen maxima, or from altima per say will work for my 96 maxima. Yes, I found a few from ebay as well, it's not exactly for 4th gen maxima, the shape of the remote looks like it's from 5th gen or other Nissan cars. Sorry for the confusion but thanks for all the replies.

When I searched on this subject a couple of weeks ago there were definite indications that the 5th gen remote doesn't work with the 4th gen system. I don't know for sure though.

FWIW, I picked up a 4th gen remote on ebay for $21 and had it programmed in less than a minute.

Be on the safe side. The 5th gen remote doesn't add any fantastic new feature anyway if it does work. Get a remote off of ebay from any 95-99 Maxima or I30, like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1871809948

Program it using the instructions here:

Have fun

i purchased one several months back and was told by a nissan dealer that a 5th gen remote would NOT work on the 4th gen cars. my understanding is that a remote for any '95-'98 maxima/i30 will work, but it seems like the remote for '99 maxima was changed and it will NOT work either.

my suggestion is to be safe and make sure you get one that looks exactly like the old one. i got a pretty good used one for less than $20 shipped on ebay. there were even some new ones on ebay for ~$50 if you really want new. good luck.

You will notice that the 4th gen remotes came in two types : the third button either had a horn simbol, or a lamp symbol.

If you get the one with the horn symbol, it functions as a panic.

If you get the one with the lamp symbol, it turns on your room lamp, kinda neat sometimes at night if you're paranoid. For this remote, you trigger the panic by holding down the lock button.

Both remotes will work, I know because I have one of each.

While we're on the subject, I'd much rather have the remote roll the windows up than down. I can't even count how many times I've had to run out to my car in the middle of a thunderstorm to close the windows completely. Anybody done this or know how to do it?

i posed this question a few months back and got the reply that it would be very difficult and costly to do because you would have to add lots of solenoids and relays, etc. everyone seems to think the cheapest way to get this done would be with an aftermarket alarm.

As stated earlier, the 5th Gen remote will NOT work on the 4th Gen vehicles. I tried using my mothers spare 5th Gen remote and it would not work at all. And also, check www.ebay.com for them. eBay always has them going for pretty cheap.
