Ignition Signal Circuit Problem

'99 GLE with 52k...

Lately I've noticed that when starting the car in the morning it sounds like the starter spins a bit extra after the car has started. Only for 1-2 seconds though. Now the other day my Check Engine light came on. Got code 0201: Ignition Signal Circuit.

Here's the interesting part... after I pulled the code, when the car is in PARK and I depress the brake, I hear a loud clicking noise right around the shifter under the console. And the check engine light flashes. It goes out when I put it in drive and head down the road. No clicking noises when I'm in drive or reverse however.

First of all, any ideas where I should look regarding the error code? Could it be a bad battery? Would a starter that is going bad cause this to happen?

Second, anyone have any idea what the clicking business under the console is???

Thanks all!

I'm putting my money on the starter. They're notorious in Maximas. And expensive.

Re: Ignition Signal Circuit Problem

One more thing... I did not get any other code, indicating that my coil pack(s) are still ok, and it doesn't seem to be missing. DTC 0201 is the only code I get.

you may not get a code for a faulty coil pack, but im willing to bet you have a bad one somewhere!! oh and your starter sounds shot too

So from everyone's experience... what does a single coil pack cost, and what do starters generally cost? Should I use OEM or otherwise?

I got a couple of coil packs, used but in perfect working condition, let me know if you need one.

The loud sound you hear around the shifter cable is probably just the neutral safety switch. This is normal, except the sound generally shouldn't be all that loud. As far as the ignition circuit, you can replace the electrical part of it for about $20.00-$25.00 from Nissan. I replaced mine, along with my starter replacement. I had noticed my old ignition switch was slightly discolored around the electrical parts. This could have been caused when I used to have a remote starter. But, now, ever since I replaced it, my startups are much more responsive and quick! Also, when replacing your starter, you may want to clean all electrical contacts, such as the solenoid wire and grounds. You'll be happy if you did. It does make a difference, because all electrical connections need as much "clean" current as possible to function properly. Corrosion cuts a majority of the necessary voltage needed!

Well I'm skeptical of the coil packs since I haven't had any misses, loss of engine power, or ECU codes indicating cylinder misfires, but I will test them all with an ohm meter. Regarding the ignition circuit, where is this part located? Is it on the steering column or under the hood? Thanks for the info.

Well it was a bad ignition coil. Tested out fine a few weeks ago, but swapped the one on cyl 6 to cyl 4, cleared the codes and got the misfire on 4. So, got a new one this weekend and swapped it out - no problems now. Thanks for everyone's help

To stop the extra starter spin you hear all you have to do is regrease your starter. It involves taking it apart a bit. www.motorvate.ca has very clear instructions on how to do this. It should only cost you a tube of high temp grease.
