Difference between automatic and 5-speed engine mounts?
Difference between automatic and 5-speed engine mounts?
I know there is a difference between the engine mounts for a Maxima with auto transmission and 5-speed transmission, but what is that difference?
The reason I ask is I'm about to replace the front and rear engine mounts on my Maxima. I have done an auto-to-5spd conversion, so which mounts do I use?
This is kind of puzzling to me since the front and rear mounts don't bolt to the transmission, they bolt to the support member under the engine and to the engine block itself, so why would there be a difference?

I know there is a diffence between the tranny mount on the auto and 5spds but I'm not sure about the engine mounts, I don't see why they would be diffent, but I'm intersted to find out as well...

the tranny mount is different.
even tho Cattman sells mounts for auto and 5speed. I honestly believe they are the same. I bought 5speed mounts, used them with my auto trans, then swapped to 5speed and still used them. had a very small fitment prob but no biggie.

Re: Difference between automatic and 5-speed engine mounts?
The auto engine mounts are electrically-operated locking units. The ECU sends a signal to unlock (soften) the mounts when the engine is idle and the car is stopped. This is done to reduce NVH. When the car is moving the mounts lock to reduce drivetrain slop. The auto ECU has the engine mount output signal. The 5-speed ECU does not. Therefore, the mounts will not operate with a 5-speed ECU. I do not know whether the mounts are normally locked or unlocked. If they are normally unlocked and require V to lock, then you may be driving around with a sloppy drivetrain at the moment. I don't know if "unlocked" is really soft or maybe just as soft as a 5-speed mount.
If I remember, I'll check my service manual to see how they operate. At worst you may need to rig the connector to the mount to always have voltage so they stay locked all the time.
