after more than 20 tanks of gas, some results...

I keep a tally of my gas consumption...personally, I think its one of
the easiest ways to determine how well your car is running, and its
very painless to keep note of...one last thing -- I always use 94 octane.

So, drum roll please:

AVERAGE MPG --> 17.75 crappy, methinks...
HIGHEST MPG --> 24.59
LOWEST MPG --> 12.00

My lowest MPG was immediately after I installed my Frankencar intake.
Since the install, my MPG have ranged from 13.2 to 22.0 MPG
That's a HUGE difference...BUT, I'll attribute it to my lead foot.

As for the rest of you...what kind of numbers do you get?
Oh, and remember -- MPG is DIRECTLY CORRELATED to how you drive.

cheers!

Those are pretty poor numbers. I average 30mpg with my '95 5-spd with only an intake, albeit about 80% highway. I do drive briskly (140km/87mph) with the occasional WOT

Do you drive in the city a lot? If not, something is wrong with your car.

70%, if not more...
on a recent mostly highway run, I got about 22 MPG...

Jeez, only 22 on the highway? Check your O2 sensor or something! I used to get 24 mpg on the highway in my old *** 85 Pontiac Bonneville with a 4-bbl carbureted (vacuum secondaries) engine and a Chevy 5.0L V-8!

Did I mention that I also think I have a bad coil pack?
I haven't received an O2 code for over a year...those were already replaced...

Anyone else have some thoughts on this???

thanks,

I think a bad coil pack would definitely be your culprit then... make a trip to your local friendly neighborhood junk yard dealer. Running on five cylinders or missing on one will really degrade your mileage.

i've been averaging 24 mpg...my schedule is always different so i couldn't really say accurate percentages for highway and city. i'm rarely in stop n go traffic though, so that may play a part.

24 isn't bad, but i'd still like a little better. i know the one thing i really need to start keeping up with is tire pressure. i rarely check and know i'm a little low. something i need to work on...and there are probably other things too but overall i keep good care of it and don't drive too too hard.

Hmm, the numbers I've crunched for the last YEAR show 15mpg to 28mpg... average 22mpg. This is mostly Los Angeles city traffic, with wonderful runs up I-5 to bring it back up to 22mpg. On the highway, 25-28mpg is pretty typical, even at high speeds.

(edit again) But yeah, I can believe a low of 12mpg. It's not that hard...

I average 17-18 mpg with 50-50 highway/city driving....my drive to work is only 8 miles so I guess that can attribute to it........
I use 93 octane as well

I was getting 18/19mpg half city/hwy with my Frankencar on. Since I've put back on the stock intake I get 22-23mpg. Same lead foot!

you'd def feel it if you had a bad coil pack...

i usuaully get on or a little below 150 at the mid way point....i never let it drop below 1/4 tank left, so thus never see my full tank mileage...

i got 16/17 mpg the last few tanks,before i installed the y pipe and intake i got 20/21 mpg,i guess most likely due to the Frankercar intake sound so sweeeeeet,that i can't help but keep pushing the gas padle to hear it roar, ,mine is auto and i fill with 93 octane always,

You don't have to tell me that either!

Maxima owners report roughly 8MPG on NA cars at track events around here, I shudder to think of what kind of fuel economy the supercharged ones get...

Hey Flo, you're in Canada right? Are you calculating your mpg correctly? I check mine at fill up's, and average 10 litres/100km. This works out to around 30mpg (Imperial). The guys in the U.S normally show lower MPG, because their U.S gallon is more than an Imperial gallon. Makes sense?

Yes, I am in Canada...
BUT, unfortunately, I'm up around 13L/100Kms...which is SHIZZIT!!!

It's OK...I'm working on it!

202,000 miles on my 95, so i have gone through many a tank of gas. I can say I always average a strong 25+ mpg mixed city/highway. The poorest i have ever had is about 23, and the best I have had is 31. I usually fill up at approx 400 miles on the trip odometer, and put in approx 16 gallons. I am not an easy driver, almost always do full throttle starts.

wow, interesting responses.... and here i am trying to get into the 27s. i also keep detailed records and my average mpg is around 26mpg - mostly hi-way driving in dallas/fort worth.

other related info - i have a stillen cone intake, 78,000 miles odo, 5-speed, not too agressive driver (usually shift at 3k rpms).

for those people getting below 26mpg, are you heavy on the gas?

i'm doing mostly suburb(light traffic)/highway driving, and i was getting **** mileage, under 300 miles per tank. Then i switched from 87 to 93 octane, and i'm averaging a litte over 200 miles at the halfway point. When i first changed, i thought the gauge was broken. I try not to be heavy on the gas, but occasionally it has to happen.

~338 miles on ~16 gal during my day to day drive to and from work. i live in hartford (CT) and work in sprinfield (MA). from my door to work is 32-36 miles depending on the route traveled. a 35-40min ride that is %50/50 city-highway. i shift between 3-5k rpm and travel 80++ mph on the highway. i use mobil/exxon or sunoco 93 octane.

mpg=21.125

my last long distance trip was to miami and back. hartford to miami door to door distance was 1550 miles in 22hrs (me andmy brother).

i would fill up on the E or when the gas light came on ~16 gallon with ~400-410miles to the tank. again all at 80 mph++

mph=70.454
mpg=25-25.625

on a side note my VE yielded about the same milage. tampa to hartford 1300 miles in 18hrs (solo) with ~16 gallon fillups at the 400 mmile mark on the trip od.

mph=72.222
mpg=25

to be honest where are my other 2.5 gallons of fuel tank. i have driven both of my maxes till they stalled and could not get in more than 16.7 galons?

Daren, it's sitting on the bottom of the fuel tank. The fuel pickup just can't get to it- it's sucking in air as well as fuel, and that's as good as sucking in nothing at all.

It's PERFECTLY NORMAL and occurs on just about every car made that I'm aware of. My Saturn is a 12.8gallon tank, I've never gotten more than 10.8 or 11.0 gallons into it. The 3.2TL we have is 18 gallons, I don't think we've ever gotten more than 16.0 gallons into it.

As for fuel economy... yeah, the numbers I crunched involved seeing at least 4000rpm every day, if not 6000rpm.

In the city, it ranges between 17 and 21

On the highway, the MOST I've gotten is 26. I'm usually around 24 to 25 depending on how hard I drive, people, Air conditioning.

I think that my Stillen intake is to blame for this..... as well as my lead foot

My foot must be made of depleted uranium cause i've NEVER gotten more than 415 miles on a full tank. Thats about 22 mpg and thats straight highway on my way up to NYC with NO stops. City driving i average 15 mpg tops. What gives Is it really my driving or might i need to check something mechanical. Btw i use 89 octane we don't have 94 anywhere down here only 93 and i didn't notice much of a difference on 93 so i stick with midgrade.

GAS MILEAGE

That is lousy. Maybe you need a tune up!I average out around 23 mpg. This is a mix of city/highway and some bumper to bumper traffic. All highway is in the high 20's. The lowest I have ever gotten was 21. And that was with the occasional downshift. The only other thing that makes sense for you is you are being abusive on your car. Start with a tune up.

I drive pretty hard. My round trip commute consists of 50 miles of TIGHT twisty roads around these West Virginia hills that are mostly double line (no passing) areas. There are plenty of slow people who need passed whenever the opportunity arises, so the car sees plenty of full throttle 6k rpm action on this part of the drive.

This is coupled with around 80 miles of highway cruising at around 80mph.

I fill up at around 270 miles (two round trips) and it takes around 11-11.5 gallons to fill the car up. Fuel mileage ranges from 24-26 mpg.

I was getting 26mpg consistently for a while there, but either due to the colder weather or the Y-pipe and B-pipe installation, 24 is closer to the norm. I'm about afraid to install different intake ducting... as this is what most feel gives worse mileage.

Oh well, it runs really good right now. The top-end power is vastly improved. I might fabricate something utilizing the existing filter box... we'll see.

I keep the tires pumped up to 40psi in the front, 35 in the rear. (you ever try and pedal a bicycle with the tires low on air? They pedal WAY easier with the tires pumped up tight) I also keep the car in an excellent state of tune and run Chevron 93 octane.

Good Luck!

i drive in NYC and i say my drive consists of 90% city and 10% highway, i get about 16mpg. but a lot of things affect gas mileage, for example tires, plugs, mods, weight, etc. so we really can't compare gas mileage that much between our cars.
