NEED HELP with my exhaust setup

I have a Stillen Y and B, RT cat, and stock muffler. The b-pipe was installed yesterday. My problem is that there is an awful rattling sound coming from the exhaust (this only started when the b-pipe was installed). It sounds like metal on metal and it doesn't happen all the time, however it does happen everytime I drive the car. It is prevalent at low RPMs in second and third gear, and at around 65mph in 5th gear. I don't think the exhaust is loose, so where is this sound coming from? Is this the sound I can expect from the Stillen Y and B combo?? I hope not. If it is rattling against something, can I tighten it more to solve the problem, or can I wrap the whole exhaust in header wrap to eliminate the sound? Any help and/or past experiences with this or similar setups would be greatly appreciated. I'm embarrassed at the sound my car is emitting.

I had this problem with my WSP Y-pipe. It is most likly your heat shield. Look under the car where the heat shields line the underbody of the car and see if one is loose. It is probally the one above your y-pipe, this shield is covering your shifter. Hope this helps some.

Well, I got under there and saw a metal piece that was in contact with the y-pipe. I bent it back a little and the sound went away.....for the most part. I think there's still some noise, so the y-pipe is probably in contact with the heat shield, but it's much better.

Hrrmmm...so you mean the Y was clear but the B pipe install moved it slightly.....shoot never realized how easy it could happen . I have the same type noise since my b-pipe install but I swear its coming from the muffler when i stick my head under there.

Were'd your noise emit from??

From inside the car it sounded like the noise was coming front the y-pipe because the noise was close to the front wheels. I guess the lesson here is to check to see if any pipes are touching any of the metal when you do any exhaust install.

Did your B pipes come with a U bolt clamp to hold the two halves together?

When I had my exhaust installed, we found that if we used the clamp, it made the top of the clamp very very likely to bang against the heat shield. So we tossed the clamp and just welded them together.

We also took off the little cross brace and added some rubber spacers between it and the car to give the B pipe more room to move around.

No rattling here.

The two parts were welded together. I don't think the b-pipe is my problem, I think the y-pipe got moved around a little during the install and was banging against a heat shield. I'm still noticing a little sound, so I'm gonna get back under my car again later today and see if I can completely fix the problem.

I agree with JustMax, it's your heatshield rattling. I had the same problem with my WSP Y/Custom B combo. I took it back to the exhaust shop and we found that the shield was not loose but just making contact with the pipe(s). You have to lift the car on the lift to get the whole thing done because it is probably touching in more than one spot.

I have the Apex'i WS, and sometimes I hear an exhaust banging noise when I go over some bumps (rarely) When I got my last service done, I asked them to look at it, and they said one of my hangers was stretched more than usual. Guess it was the Apex'i b pipe section that was heavy. I put a newer, Heavy duty hangar on, and it went way a little bit, but the exhaust still bangs sometimes.

Sometimes the rattle could be caused by old hangars not holding the exhaust in the correct position, and then coming in contact w/ metal pieces? I don't know, but thought it might be something to look at.

I found it

I found the source of my rattling. It was the b-pipe after all. The section that is welded together is touching the heat shield above it and causing all kinds of racket down there. I'll have to wait until the pipes cool off until I get back under there and fix it. I'm so happy.

I have the stock muffler on to reduce noise, so no it doesn't bang.
