Automatic Transmission Issue
Automatic Transmission Issue
I'm experiencing some odd behavior with my automatic transmission on my 1998 SE. It seems that the engine is revving a lot higher than it needs to based on the amount of throttle that I'm supplying, ie 40mphs and if I accelerate it redlines. I recently brought the car in for service at Nissan and they checked all of the levels. Is it possible that the tranny is going? I bought my car used a year and a half ago and have been kind to it the whole time. It has 63000 miles on it but I put about 20000 on it since I got it. What could be wrong with it? Thanks for taking the time to look at my post.
your not being very clear....if you accelerate around 40 mph, and it redlines, what kind of throttle are you giving it? seems like its downshifting to 1st which causes the redline, then shifts to 2nd after that...maybe you could be a little bit more clear, and we can offer some advice
wont get into third?
Is it like not wanting to get into third?
I took my car for warranty service in the summer and they rebuilt the transmission (long story). After that the same problem you are describing happened to me. If I pressed the gas WOT while going at 40 mph or higher, the revs would go all the way to the redline and the transmission would not pick 3rd. I can not tell you exactly what was the problem. In my case I guess they just failed to install the transmission properly. I can tell you that its fixable because the dealer shop did manage to make it work properly (after I took it back two more times).

Not wanting to shift
It seems that the car is not wanting to shift as easily. If I apply more throttle it will rev the engine to high RPMs and then shift. If I don't apply more throttle, it will not accelerate much. I noticed this behavior recently. It was not always like this. My car always had very smooth acceleration but not I'm noticing different behavior.

My old auto tranny did something similiar. I had a hard time accelerating, the Rpm would kinda float around, and it didn't want to shift. I took it into Nissan (still under warranty) and they gave me a new tranny, I guess it wasn't holding line pressure for some reason (they never said specifics) so it didn't want to stay in a gear. Hope you get your problem fixed.
Re: Not wanting to shift
Hi,
Thanks for the concern, my vehicle is covered under a warranty so I should be alright. The issue that you described sounds exactly like what my car is experiencing. It seems that RPMs are floating around and the car is not shifting into a higher gear. ie: Not going from 2nd to 3rd. I will keep you posted on the results. Thanks!
