Is my tranny toasted?

Basically, the transmission seems to be stuck in first gear. No matter where the shifter is (even in park!), it still tries to pull forward. I say tries, because my front tire is up against a parking curb, so I can't move the car.

I'm thinking the problem is my tranny, partly because I recently accidentally put it in park while I was still rolling and the noise it made wasn't pretty. I'm toying with the idea of jacking up the front end (to get the wheels off the ground) and revving it up real good to see if maybe I can knock loose some debris that might be stuck in there or something. I'm thinking if the tranny is already toast, it can't hurt to try, right? Or is this a really bad idea?

Two other things I should mention, I seem to have lost my gas cap the day before this problem occurred. The car wouldn't start until I sealed up the opening with some packing tape and a rubber band. I don't think this would be related to my shifting issue though. Also, I've been messing around with the fuse box lately, and I know a few wires are loose in there. I don't really know how the transmission works, so this is just a shot in the dark, but is it possible that maybe I just accidentally loosened a connection that goes to some electronics that control the shifting?

Are there any other thoughts as to what could be causing this problem, or things I should check to better diagnose the issue? Any help is appreciated.

hey buddy,

i work in a tranny shop fixing people's toast trannies. what you problem sounds like it is a tranny problem, probably ate the gears while putting it into park while rolling... not a smart thing to do. i did it on my maxima and now i have hard time putting the thing into D fromn park. if you can take it to a local tranny place, see if you can get a free estimate. and get that gas cap!! they shouldnt be too expensive, call ur local dealer. its dangerous to be without a gas cap, paper and a rubber band arent worth jack.

If you work for a tranny shop you should know it's a Park Pin that gets busted and/or chewed.

Metal debri from that inncident has probably caused a solinoid valve to get stuck locking your tranny in D, regardless of the shifter position.

We can drain some of your tranny fluid and see if anything obvious comes out, or I can pull your VB, though it's been really cold lately, hope you have a garage!
