This is why I am glad I drive a 97

Maximas are just not phat like they used to be. I mean yeah a 2k2 Max SE is a sweet car but it just doesn't stand out or hold its own like Maximas once did. In 97, when my car was new, you could not get ANYTHING better for the money. Basically your only option was to pay 10 grand more for a 328i. See, now it's different. Maximas are no longer on my lust list because there are so many other cars you can get for about the same or very little more that are much better cars. (G35!!!) No offense, 5th geners.

Back in 97, a Maxima SE was about the phattest car u could get for 25-30k, now there are at least a half dozen other cars I can think of that for about the same money are much better. Also, I just cant get tired of the 97 styling. 97-99 is the best looking Maxima ever. I think the 95-96s are starting to look dated, but still attractive. My 97 still looks fresh after 5 years and still turns heads all the time. I will never get rid of this car, I love it so much. It just runs and runs and runs, the inside still looks brand new when clean after 5 years and 85k miles (I'm serious), the Bose still rattles my eardrums, and the torque and overall refinement and performance of the VQ engine continues to, and always will, amaze me(I personally think we 4th geners also have the best VQ- what a motor!!).

I love this car, I will never get rid of it, there is no way that a dealer will give me what it's worth to me for trade in when I get another car. I am going to drive this car literally until the wheels fall off. After I get something else in a few years I am going to restore my Maxima, repaint it and put TVs and stuff in it, as a hobby on the side.

Just felt like speaking my mind for a while, I haven't posted on here in a LONG time, hope everyone is doin' well. LATER!!!!!

I agree with the styling, cars just a few years older have that boxy look that just doesnt look nice still. I like the way the body on this car was done.

Yes I agree. People legitimately diss the 4th gen style, but I really don't understand why. I honestly think that a 97 Maxima SE is one of the best looking cars of the 90's. The body on the 4th gen was nicely done, especially in '97 when they facelifted it. My 97 still looks fresh, and I think it will be a long time until it starts to look old and dated. Everytime I see a 97-99 SE I always turn to look at it, they look so good! And that's kinda goes along with my point, a 5th gen Maxima SE that hasnt just rolled out of the showroom does NOTHING for me. I don't even like the 2000-2001 Maxima at all. I have a freind who has a 2000 SE and literally every single person in my group of friends has told me that they like mine much better.
The 4th gen Maxima rules, end of story. I mean sure, you can come up to me in your new G35, TL-S, or whatever, and you can boast and gloat all you want. But the point is, back in 97, the Maxima was on top of the heap, end of story, and that's why I love my car and will NEVER get rid of it.

I love my 97 GLE too. I went from a 90 Sentra, the most base model that you could possibly buy, power nothing, 4-speed, you get the idea, to the 97 GLE with power EVERYTHING and more.

I don't like the paint peeling off the bumper, but that's nothing a bra can't fix. My step-mom used to like to back out of the driveway without looking when it was my dad's car.

This post almost brought a tear to my eyes. Couldn't have said it any better. I don't plan on selling my max ever too. My first car and so many memories already in the almost 2 years I've had it. With 33k on the odometer I still got a while to go

I agree with all of you on the Looks and Craftsmanship of the 4th Gen Maxima.
I wish Nissan would pay better attention to detail on their 5th Gens. Don't get me wrong they do look awesome but the minor details that the owners are complaining about just make me think twice about buying a New Nissan in the future. For me there are just too many recalls and adjustments that the 5th Gen owners must FIGHT with the Nissan Dealer to get fixed.
Nissan doesn't care about it's customers like it did in the 90's.

yea, i wouldn't get a 5th gen, not cause of looks but where the price falls, i can get a better car in everyway (BMW) for a little more depending on years.

but dam, i still sit in amazement just knowing that my 97 max (used) was once over 25,000 dollars....

just like computers, how they used to be like 3,000 dollars and now u can get a great system with 17" screen and printer for less than 1500....1800 tops, yet people paid 2,200 for a pentium II 500 mhz garbage...

Guys, I agree that the 97 Max is a very handsome body style and in the five years I've owned mine, I always give it a second look when it's parked and think about how clean the lines are. Good thing the Honda dealers weren't dealing on the new Accord V-6 back in 97 when I looked at those!

I also own an 02 SE, and both are excellent cars in their own rights. I never cared too much for the back end of the 97, but then again I'm not a fan of the back end on the 02 either. I do like the increased torque of the 02...you can definitely feel it compared to my 97.

I do think that the build quality was better on the 97. My 02 has been to dealer in 3 months more times/days than my 97 has been in 5+ years. I disagree on the pricing comments though. My 02 is optioned out exactly as my 97 was and the 02 stickered for a tad over $1K more. That's not much at all considering 5 years difference.

The bottom line for me is that I like both of my Maximas as they are both good cars with much too offer. I liked the 90 Max SE my dad had as well. (He has a 95 SE now).

95 96 don't look too old...do they?

when these body styles get old, i'll slap on some head-turning body kits all over...hehehe

95-6 looks better (non-cleared) in the @ss with creased metal.
but front end looks sheepish

Um...not really.

The motor in your(our) car(s) can more than hold its own against pretty much any V6 ever made. I remember reading the 1995 Motor Trend in disbelief when I saw the 0-60 time of 6.6. Thats still really fast today, almost 8 years later...AMAZING!

That's another reason why I like the 4th gen best, back then there was NOTHING that could touch the VQ, and we were the only cars with it. Now virtually every Nissan and Infiniti have a variant of the VQ. And that's a smart move, I would do the same thing, I'm just saying that when our cars were new there was nothing else in the world with a V6 that good.

The Maxima has lost its edge and originality, however I don't care because I love knowing that I drive one that sure as hell has it and will continue to for many years to come. I mean, show me a 1997 sedan as goodlooking, sporty, refined, reliable, fast, and luxurious as the car I drive every day for the price!!!!! 4th Gen RULES!!!!!!!!!

And since the signatures aren't working, I have a '97
Superblack 5spd SE with intake, catback, muffler and 5%tint.

Later everyone!!!!!!

i agree with all of you. i owned a 92 se 5spd.and a 86se auto. back in 90 when i learned to drive i thought the 3rd gens were ugly.cause i was rollin a 2nd gen. but when i got my 92 there was nothing better. imho. when the 4th gen came out i thought "ugly they shouldnt have changed" but when the 97 came out. it was that much better. 97-99's look like a car that will pimp slap you if you treat it wrong! from the front bumper to the rear even inside. you gotts to love the maxima. people talk shyt about us. but maxima drivers are a different breed. we perfer luxury, comfort, style, power and class. over speed. i tell people with hondas "youll never be at my level (with their car)cause when your at your best im just begining, youll always have to play catch up with the max, and thats how it should be" Maximas cant stop 'em my$.02

before this thread gets any longer...

I just wanted to say that 95-96 and 97-99 each have their own strengths.

For a 95-96, I think the rear end looks really good at every angle except looking at it directly from the back. It just has a more aggressive look, since it seems like the rear end is a little bit higher relative to the 97-99s. Also, the front end, similarly, has a VERY nice look to it at certain angles. From the 3/4 view from the front, I have to say it looks pretty bland. Otherwise, the big glass foglamps can't be beat

The 97-99s look good all around. There isn't really a flaw, but it seems like the rear became even a little bit more bland, safe, and simple. Directly from the rear, the rear end looks much better than the 95-96. The front became more aggressive (which I like). I would do a 97+ front bumper conversion but I'd rather get a Stillen front lip for my 96 because that's the look I prefer (I'm just a little bit tired of 97+ front lips).

Anyway, all 4th Gens have incredible side profiles, from any angle. The lines are just perfect, especially if the car is lowered w/ side skirts.

I would talk about the beautiful 3rd Gen rear end but it's a 4th Gen forum, heh.

Anyway, I agree with everyone else that I'm proud to own this and I'll keep it until it can't keep up with me

Agreed. My baby still looks better, IMO, then any 5th gen that I have seen.

In fact, my girl and I were at dinner the other night and a 5th gen parked next to mine. Without saying a word, the first thing she says is "wow, your's looks soooo much better then that one".

I like the look of the 5th gen and 3rd gens, but IMO the 97-99 is the way to go.

Just my 2 cents.

i dont like the fact that the driver has to be smaller and smaller to fit in to a max. the 5th gen is smaller the the 4th gen for me. the 3rd gen is the biggest. I dunno, are people shrinking and no one told me about it

I agree the quality on the 4th gen was Nisaan's best Max. I own a 95, a buddy of mine owns a 2K and an employee of mine owns a 97.

my experiences are this...

The front: I love the 95-96 front bumper best. The two lower intake slots look more aggressive to me tan the 97-99 bumper. You cant beat the bright, beautiful glass Fogs. I do prefer the grille of the 97-99 however. I like the horizontal bar in that grille. I one day would like to fit a 97-99 grille onto my 95.

The rear: I used to prefer the 97-99 rears more, but after having my 95, and after parking next to my employee's 97, I really prefer the look of the 95-96 more. One thing too is that they are more rare, and everyone seems to be doing the 97-99 conversions to their 95-96. I like the ridge in the trunk that continues into the tails. Looks more aggressive. However the tails themselves looked rushed and cheap, did not care for the "color block" appearance of the stock 95-96 tails. I am patiently awaiting good quality red/clears with temporary altezzas till they are available.

The interior: I like my 95 Bose stereo better than the newer gen 4 models. They fit more flush in the dash and the speakers are actually larger and of better qaulity. Sounds as good today as new. I like the padded a-pillars and the tweeters in pillar better than the ones poked in the door panels (which looks like a cost cutting measure). I also prefer my open square cupholders which are pliable to fit anything I can shove into them. No lid to break off or anything. And I like the steering wheel better in my 95, the generic appearing black one in my employees 97 looks down right cheap. I do feel the 95 GLE should have had a electric passenger seat however, cheap ole nissan cutting costs there in the beginning. And gen 5 interior appointments are of less quality materials over gen 4. The Door rests especially. And the goofy clock on gen 5 dash! Argh!

The drive: I feel gen 4 feels tightest and more solid. I can feel the 2000 being more bulky and bloated over gen4. BUT, I do beleive the steering was vastly improved in the gen 5 over the gen 4. Brakes on gen 4 feel more solid too, dont know how they compare in actual testing. But the pedal on my pals gen 5 brakes feels mushier compared to mine. Another aquaintance of mine who owned two gen 4's and now 2 gen 5's says his gen 5 brake rotors warp very easily and never had that prob with any of his gen 4's, ever.
He prefered his gen 4s as well over is gen 5's.

Overall, I love the gen 4, but in overall looks on exterior, I am still in love with gen 3! If Nissan wanted to make a "retro" maxima, that is the Max to get it's styling cues from. Gen 3 was simply gorgeous. But gen 4 had the most going for it. I love mine.

VIVA LE 97!

Before I knew what car I was going to get, for some reason I just felt that it had to be a 97.. whether it was Accord, Bimmer, Sentra, Corolla, whatever 4-door i was going to get...

Ahhh yes, who can pass up 190HP and a higher than HP torque rating from the year 1997. It took the rest of Japan quite a few years to catch up.

Being a 97 owner, this thread makes me love my car more now... even when I was starting to sway towards the 3rd gen side of things..

We should change the thread to "This is why I am glad I drive a 4th Gen"

IMO...

95-96

Pros
- a tab bit more lightweight
- the ruby pearl and blue color (rare)
- shorter rear bumper
- fog lamps
- stronger Bose
- rear M A X I M A lettering
- headlamp seals (they never fog up)
- Apexi WS perfect fit

Cons
- foggy (not literally) headlamps
- round front bumper
- not so attractive steering wheel
- weird-looking rear from directly behind
- crappy cupholders
- not so safe

97-99

Pros
- overall styling
- cleaner rear end
- more aggressive front fascia
- clear, plastic headlamps
- steering wheel
- red needles on the SE's
- stock SE wheels
- acceptible safety

Cons
- easily breakable cupholder lip
- neutral-looking rear
- weird-looking rear bumper (kinda long) from the side
- common

Neutral Opinions between the two
- overall interior
- tail lights
- side profile
- spoiler

All in all, the conclusion is, 4th Gens have always been way ahead of their time! (3rd gens too... )

I hate to be so unsophisticated, but I don't see a great difference b/t 95-96 and 97-99 maxima; doing a conversion seems ridiculous to me (just my opinion), and I like my '96 rear best. Overall, I totally agree with 4th gen is amazing for the $ - paid $17,695 for mine new - nothing in that range was - or is (now) close for that much. It looks like the fastest 2003 Accord can match the 1995 Maxima (unless you have a few bolt ons ). On the BMW 3 series - yeah they look/perform great, but cost quite a bit more, and don't have near the reliability of a Maxima (also check the ridiculous prices when the dealer fixes/does maintainence on it for you).

Still the one

I have to say that my Maxima SE (1995) is the best car I've ever owned. I'm still hanging onto it after owning it for 8.5 years (since new) and logging 125k miles. So well held together. I've test driven the 5th gen Maxima and a few other cars... yes, the "new" feeling is hard to beat. Yet so many of these cars don't feel so much better to drive me into getting one. Horsepower ratings keep going up, but to what end? They make the cars heavier so the acceleration isn't much improved. And my Maxima gets unbeatable gas mileage for a V6 (25 full city, 27 avg, 29 hwy, 32 steady hwy). Something to be thankful for in this once-again situation of astronomical gas prices.

But I have to admit, I'm having a bit of trouble being seduced by some competitors (thinking used A4, BMW 330/530). When you've owned something for a long time, it does tend to feel a little too familiar (or tired)... itching for a new change. That's what prompted me to upgrade my interior 2 years ago (definitely helped!). Perhaps my next step is a body kit to extend my ownership a few more years.

I have a 1997 Rosewood SE, and I think it is one of the best cars for the money. I love the way my front looks lit up with the fogs and headlights, the only cars that has a front fully lit view that are alot sexier than the Maxima's stock would probably be the BMW 5 series with angel eyes, and other very expensive high end cars.

I do like the 5th gen's gauges though, with the blue outline.

MaxedOut97SE, I couldn't agree with you more. 97-99's are absolutely gorgeous and are holding their own very welll when it comes to styling.
I cannot see myself selling this car, ever....I'll buy something else eventually, but this one will stay as well..

95-96 Maximas have a "stronger" Bose than the 97-99s?? How? I thought they all had a 200 watt system with the same 6.5" speakers all around .And the head units just got a little prettier as the years got newer.

damn why is it that the majority have 97's? well i have a 99 and i agree with everyone here, EXCEPT, that i feel like i'm not turning heads. i feel like my cars getting old while seeing these tl-s, cl-s, 2k2-2k3 maxima's. i only turn their heads when they hear my sound system. =( i definitely need a body kit and rims to turn heads. =) but i'll be owning mine for a while, till i can afford a Diablo, haha just dreaming.

spook

I have to say it really makes me happy to see how devoted the 4th Gen Maxima drivers are. I have a BLack on Black leather fully loaded 1996 SE and the car is just superb, never plan on selling it. I think it's back is prettier than 97-99 and I like the front too (changed the headlights ofcourse) but too each his own. Not only is exterior beautiful but I love the T-style dash which is becoming outdated in new models except for G35 thank-goodness. Also the ergonomics of the dash and buttons put the high-end BMWs and Benzs dashes to shame. The 4th Gen is hands down a beauty - both inside and out!!! Of course not fogetting the VQ. LONG LIVE THE 4th GEN!!!!!

Exactly the way I feel. 4th Gen simply wont be touched. 97-99 was just icing on the cake. When my dad bought his back in 99, I was in love with it. I treated it as if it were my own, and I didnt even drive it. The lines on it are just so smooth and fresh, and are not even starting to look dated IMO. Same reason I bought myself a 2000 Civic SiR. I am a big fan of Clean Lines.
