hood strut covered in 5 year warranty?
hood strut covered in 5 year warranty?
I have a 98 maxima SE. My hood strut shows signs of weakness. After few minutes of staying up it slowly comes down. I have 6 more months of my 5 year warranty. Just wondering if these struts are covered in the 5 year warranty. If not, how much does it cost at the dealership?
I live in Canada(Ottawa), is there any other store that I can get them at a reasonable price?
Thanks
Chidam.

Re: hood strut covered in 5 year warranty?
I have the same problem like yours. I would like to know the warrenty if some has information. I have 99 GLE. Once I asked in dealer was $110 each and labor is about $45.00. 99 Max has lots of Missed IDLE problems. My previous 95 Max has no problem at all. Is someone know where to write warrenty informations or recall bullettin.
my driver side hood strut leaked all the oil inside and doensn't work anymore... i went to a junkyard and picked ripped a hood stick off an old mazda, it gets annoying gettin to the trunk to get that stick and put it up on the hood... im still lookin for a busted maxima in a junkyard somewhere so i can rape it for parts.

There are a few Max fanatics in the Ottawa area like Blaxxxima, tri-lite & elcid. Drop by the Canadian Forum some time.

Replacing worn hood lift supports
Thanks to members "NUGE" and "Daniel B. Martin" for their help
Here are part numbers for the MUCH cheaper alternative to the factory OEM hood supports, which seem to get weak releatively quickly.
Nissan OEM
Part Numbers: 65470-40u00 (Left) 65471-40u00(Right)
Cost: about $68 each from nissanautoparts.com, Courtesy Nissan, etc.
Alternatives
These replacement struts are made by "Strong Arm" and are cheap alternatives to the "weak" OEM ones:
Strong Arm #4524 (Aftermarket): about $16 each
These can be ordered online from this specific link:
http://www.partsamerica.com/SelectPa...artNumber=4524
If you want to purchase some locally, these are what the various Auto Parts stores may refer to them as instead of Strong Arm #4524 :
NAPA Auto Parts: Part # 819-4737
Autozone: Part # 95784 ( Mighty Lift )
Kragen: part # 072-862 ( Steady Lift )
Car Quest: Part # 4524
How to install:
Installation is not difficult. Prop the hood open with a broomstick. Use a 13mm open end wrench to remove the upper (hood) and lower (inner fender) ball studs. The ball studs are permanently mounted to the sockets on each end of the factory lift. After both studs are backed out of their threaded holes, the lift comes off the car (with the ***** still in their sockets). The Strong Arm replacements ball studs are not attached to the replacement lifts. Thread the ball studs into the threaded holes on the hood and inner fender and tighten with a suitable wrench. Then simply "snap" each socket end of the replacement lift on the ball studs. Repeat the process for the other side.
These have a LIFETIME warranty. Even if these wear out again, then take you receipt back and the struts and exchange them for a new set. It beats paying $140 each time for the OEM ones that aren't any better.

Once again Maxima.org comesthrough and saves me money.
Sheesh, $100+ at the dealership?
I just took my leaky struts out and now use a broomstick for support.
I'd much rather have a latch than struts, but the stick works nice and sturdy-like.
Price? $0. Found it when I was at my parents in their garage

Pep Boys and Strauss got some Sachs Stabililus Lift-O-Mat lift supports that cant even fit the maxima. those are the only ones the carry, and it had Lifetime Limited warranty.
part # is SG325009 ($20). But they dont Fit. The strut is angled in a way that it is meant to be mounted on horizontal ball stud, but the maxima ball stud is vertical. so the strut just pops out.
Autozone claims their Mighty Lift (E95784 $20) does not have a lifetime Warranty. Smh

I also have a pair off ebay... I think they were like $18.89 for both plus like 6-7 bux shipping? 2 months and zero issues. Holy bump batman, I read the OP and was like "lol this dumbass can't even count, it's 2009 - no 4th gens are still under their 5 year warranty) then it was like "daaaamn... serious grave diggin' bumpage"
they have a buy one get one free deal at autozone. just follow these 6 easy steps.
1. buy one hood strut.
2. install it on your car.
3. put the old one back in the little pouch
4-5. return it and say its the wrong one and it looks used. Just ask to do an exchange for another one.
6. install new hood strut.

Hood Struts Problem
I ordered REPN131701 which you can google and easily find as replacements for my 1996 Maxima. Quality wise they look just fine, but as someone mentioned earlier:
"The strut is angled in a way that it is meant to be mounted on horizontal ball stud, but the maxima ball stud is vertical. so the strut just pops out."
I did find that if I loosened the housing on the struts I ordered by unscrewing the head on one end a few turns it can be forced into position, but I'm not to totally keen with that. There was also another informative post:

That was good information, but he doesn't say if any of them are angled for a better fit. So what I'm asking is for feedback on which ones have worked for anyone that fit properly.

you can also just mod broken hood struts, drill a hole through the shiny metal part of the strut fully extended, and you can stick a screw through the hole and the strut will hold
Hoping for some better details on this.
I'm not near auto junkyards and need to replace these struts on both my car and my Dad's. He's getting up in age, so I could use some good feedback.
I was hoping for something like "I used this - or that - brand and they were a good match."
Here's some pictures of the REPN131701 I got and the old one shown below it:

You can see the deep angle cut on the ball hub on the old one compared to the new:

They move down about the same, but look at the upward swing difference:

That's why they pop out of the holding clip.
Any online store pictures say they are representative and not actual so you get no reference.
Anyone know for sure - hopefully firsthand - of a better replacement that can be used?

Yes, the bottom lift support is the one that comes with the car.
The tilt factor is big compared to the one I got as a replacement.
I figure others may have found ones that come closer to the original evrn if not an exact replacement.

I had to do this tonight - Advance Auto, "Strong Arm" brand # 4524 (package actually has E 4524). It has the angle. I took pics comparing the original and the replacement, but can't find my camera now...
That's great to know. I'll go with them unless I hear about something other, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen. How did you happen to make you're choice on which ones you chose to use?
BTW - Your post here and the one by ORBRIT who thoughtfully gave a lot of information but neglected to say what he actually used, were by far the most useful and informativive in this entire thread. Thanks!

They have that cut in the socket so the bolt can swing more than the ones I had purchased, though still a bit less the ones that came with the car.
You said that you couldn't find the picture you had, but do you remember if the Strong Arms came anywhere near the ones you removed?
