Ah yes, SE is the easy way to go. You can get a GXE and put fogs in yourself. Tht would be cheaper. As for Auto vs. 5sp, most hear will say 5sp. I say whatever you'd rather drive. I'm not sure what auto hvac is....I'm not the brightest.

i am just looking to see if there are any issues with the automatics?
i own a "SHO" and when owning one you learn to stay away from the autos because ford cannot make a decent tranny. so i am torn betwen the auto or 5 speed max

Whatever you are more comfortable. My auto 97 SE is running with no problems over 105k now.

you can get a spoiler on all models....GXE is traditionally the cheapest. fogs and spoiler were a stock item for SEs only

Defenatly get a 5-speed! The performance differance is huge. The maxima 5-speed is great. I have auto and wish I had a 5-Speed.
As far as GXE vs. SE vs. GLE goes, I would get an SE, they are the "sporty" model with a little bit better suspension, and they come stock with a spoiler and nice rims (97-99). I think you will be happy with a 5-speed SE max.
Good luck,
Dan
