alternator recalls for early 4th gens

I've heard much about their being recalls on early 4th gen alternators and have come to realize mine is on its last leg or completely bad. I have about 74k on my max. Now I went to the dealership and they looked up my VIN saying there was no recall on mine so no good. Wasn't this recall for all of 95-96 maximas? If so what do I do? I'm a poor full time college student/full time intern. I need all the free stuff i can get. O yea and my butt dyno sensed problems on the ride so I decided to see if any codes were stored on the ECU, of course there were!THREE

Front bank 02 sensor
knock sensor
Closed loop control...?anyone know what this has to do with? thanks for all your help.

O yea and my starters almost done too, YESSSSSSS gotta love it

*Edit* Just realized that the recall was actually for later 4th gen maximas, but has anyone else experienced premature dying on their 95-96 alternator? This seems a little early to me

recall was for later 97's up to 99, not the 95-96....im an early 97 myself, and am most likely not included in the recall and my alternator seems to be going soon

for those codes, like i said, replace the o2 sensor first before ya do anything else, and maybe all 3 codes will be gone

I have a 96 with 86K on it. I haven't had any problems with the car not holding a charge or anything of that nature. What kind of signs are you seeing that the alternator is going out?

Will Nissan or the dealer send out letters to customers with the 97-99's that this recall affects? My brother has a 1997 (not sure of its production run) and I was checking for him.

I believe there was a recall that covered the O2 sensors on 95-96 models. You might want to check into it.

The starter problem is normal for 95-96 models. If you have the time, you can try regreasing the gears. Instructions at www.motorvate.ca OR just replace it yourself. Autozone $140

Good luck.

the main one was that mysteriously my battery slowly showed the signs of dying and finally just did from only being in their a year and a half. I put in a brand new battery just assuming my car wasnt ready for these cold michigan winters since i just moved out here for school. Now there is a very strong whistlying sound coming from the alternator and all electrical items seem weak again as if my car is just running flat off the battery and wearing it down.

My Maxima, from July of '97, had the recall. It had about 70K-ish. But I found out the hard way at 11:30pm, 70 miles north of Albany NY in the Adirondack Mountains, on my way home to Penn. (I laugh NOW!)

The dealership that I bought my car from has sent me 2 notices already. Eventually I will go and get it replaced.
