does anyone ever buy a car with over 200k miles on it?
does anyone ever buy a car with over 200k miles on it?
My '95 SE has 187,000 miles on it. I will be passing 200K miles in 2003.
I've been thinking of selling it before it gets to 200k.
Will anyone buy a car with that high mileage on it? Should I just keep driving it until it dies?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

no matter what you do, with 200k miles on the chassis, you're not gonna get near what you would like, even a somewhat small amount. like the others said, use it as a 2nd car. you'll get tenfold the amount of using it that way than getting the little money you would from selling it.
On my 203,000 mile 95gle
Significant part replacement list:
oxy sensor 120K ($100)
alternator 175K ($300)
starter 180K ($200)
CV axles 190K ($250)
Things I have never changed (and maybe should??):
Fuel filter
muffler
belts
Minor things i currently need to fix:
backlights on climate control burnt out
new floor mats
worn leather
all in all the car has been extremely reliable. that's why we bought a 2000SE for my wife a few months ago

you honestly will get nothing for this car unless its in perfect shape and fully loaded. I personally would just keep it as a second car and if you can't afford two cars and dont' want to keep this one because u think it will die soon, invest the extra money you would spend on a new car and buy a new engine and trans for this car (combination and install will run u maximum of 3,000 dollars. That's basically a new car right there and whatever car u wanted to buy would cost more than 6,000 more than likely so u can also invest in stuff to better your car or throw a turbo in and REALLy love your car...that's what i would do personally

WHOA -- you might want to get that fuel filter checked out -- that's not good!
I think regular ROUTINE maitenence is either at 15k or 30k? (It doesn't really matter for me right now, cause I replaced mine last oil change)

how much would it cost for a new engine in there? how much would doing that change resale value as opposed to selling/trading in with big miles?

I wouldn't buy a car with 200K on it. By then, alot rubber parts are near the end of life and major oil leaks are the norm. From personal experience...most cars over 10 years old and over 150K will need lots of new seals/gaskets. Oil seals, cam seals, oil pan gaskets, tranny gaskets..etc. Rubber parts are cheap but labor is $$$.
i came across a 95 or 96 SE with 195K when i was shopping for my last Max....they had an asking of almost 6K on it, i kept seeing it ont he internet for over a month while I was searching. i went to the dealer because i wanted to drive it just to see how good it felt...got there and it was gone, the salesman told me he got 3500 for it....and it was a bare bones SE except for the auto.
if a car runs, has heat, starts decent it is always worth $1000 to some one as a "beater"...i've paid $800 for old preludes with 200K and rust spots the size of a basket ball.
My brother has a 93 sable wtih 156K and a dealer was going to give him $1500 in trade....and it reaks of his cigarette smoking.

I think it depends a lot on the use the car has seen - my 96 GXE Auto is about to hit 160,000 miles, the vast majority of which are highway miles. (Less shifting, low transmission wear; constant, low RPM's less engine wear). I am in total trust that with continued routine maintaineance and keeping an eye on things, I can keep her running for another 100,000 easy, and I plan on doing so.
I know a guy who got 360,000 out of an old Mazda, on the original engine & transmission...it can be done...
I'm going to inspect my belts, hoses, and CV boots this weekend, the rubber parts do tend to fail first...

And new engine and tranny hardly makes it a new car. Little things are what adds up on old cars. Exhaust, sensors, random breakdowns. You can never REALLY make a new car with anything short of a ground up restoration.
