My Maxima Took A Big Hit, Today. I'm Sad.

I was making a lefthand turn into a strip mall, crossing two lanes of traffic (with the consent of a driver stopped in the first lane), when a young woman - choosing the inside lane and going about 40 mph - took-out my trunk and bumper. I was 80% into the parking lot when the new Rav4 wiped out the back of my Maxima, leaving the contents of my trunk scattered across Route 114 in Middleton, Massachusetts. We both got out of our vehicles uninjured. That was the good news, and I'm thankfull no one was hurt. But ...

My poor, sweet Maxima. She's a 95 GLE with 175K miles, and she's a champ! Even after the violent collision, back doors buckled, frame bent, and bumber in the trunk (I had to cut it off with a utility knife) she fired-up right away, and went down the road like a brand new car. My co-workers couldn't believe the car was driveable. After work, I played a couple of hours of tennis, and then hit the highway for my 45 mile drive home. She ran dead straight. I can't explain it, but it's almost as if the car has dignity: even after taking an uncalled for beating, she dusted herself off and wrapped me up for a safe, comfortable ride home. I know these are just cars, but my Maxima is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I was going to sell her, soon, as I have a '99 loaded SE coming my way at the end of the month. I'm pretty sure the insurance company will total the car (Blue Book is about $5,300 w/ mileage deduction, and I'm sure there's a lot more damage than that). But, now, I feel as if I have to put her right. I feel guilty about hurting my Maxima, even though it wasn't my fault. It's as if this car has been a loyal and dutiful friend that has asked very little and given everything.

Thanks for reading, and give your Max a little pat on the dash to let her know you appreciate her.

Couple things...

First, I've heard stories of liability on behalf of the driver that let you go. Thats an option for you.

Second, my car did the same thing, and continues to do so. I was in a fender bender. I was certian my right front wheel would be out of alignment and it wasn't! Other than the bent metal, the max looks and runs great. Even being an **** enthusiast, the car is great.

Third, glad everyone is OK.

Why is that last?

first of all go to the hospital, get yourself checked out.. stay home a few days from work... get a rental on her policy.. milk it while you can. as far as the totalled car.. that's too bad.. would have been nice to have 2 maxes to choose from on a daily basis.

although i never got a turbo, or something that makes my car superfast, i always took pride in what i put into my car, it has been like a second girlfriend for me.

And for some reason, when i get into accidents (been in two already), i always put my car before me. I check every scrape, see how much damages are before i check my body for blood, bruises, and pains...

sounds stupid but i love my car so much that if someone was running straight into it, i might jump in the middle of impact to cushion the hit

nah, i don't love it THAT Much!

I know the feeling man. My baby was in an accident, took 7800 in body damage, and is still going strong.

I am sorry to hear about yours. Just remember to get another!

Same thing happened to me when I had a jeep. The right hand lane was "clear" and I was waved through the near lane, and as I crossed onto the side street, this hooker came plowing up and t-boned me. She was going about 45 in a 25, and pretty much admitted it, but the police would not cite it as contributory to the accident, and my ins did not want to take up a contrib negligence defense. Oh well, I changed carriers shortly thereafter.

It was my fault, and i was cited for failure to yield right of way (later dropped). It went on my insurance's bill, and I was determined to be at fault. She was not hurt too bady, and except for a bent Nerf bar, the XJ was unscathed.

Her POS probe was totalled.
