I'd tell you the issue number if I could find the damn thing.
Pretty sure it was an SE though, but with a mod or few I'm sure the auto could make it.

The Taurus SHO also made the cut while surprisingly the mustang GT did not. The aerodynamics were too poor, but when they put cardboard flaps over the headlights on the GT they were able to get over 140 -- barely.

6000 rpm in an automagic Maxima is about 170mph. My max will go 140mph too, but that's only about 4800 rpm.

I know for sure that I saw my speedo needle at least 1/2 inch to the left of the "140".

I'm sure you can put the needle past 140mph. But, there is no way you are hitting 6000rpm in 4th gear...if you are automatic. As I posted above, that's 170mph.

I'm well aware of the effects of drag. At 5500 rpm, with my 235/45/17 tires, that would put me around 155 mph. Is it really that hard to believe?
I may just have to take some pics of the speedo and tach at that speed to show that an auto NA max can go 150+. That's if someone else is willing to be in the car.

I wouldn't know if an auto could go that fast or not (stock) I have a manual, I was answering your question since no one else did.

As long as I've been here, I haven't seen it done. To do 150 in a stock auto, you're going to need a hell of a long road with no police for 20 miles.

There is a place in Alabama on I65 that is nearly impossible to be chased by cops unless they are behind you, I've had my car to 140 there a couple of times I don't know if it is possible for a auto to go 150+ but this would be the place to try. (BTW for those of you who live in Alabama its the Dolly Pardon Bridge).

I live in AL, let's meet up. I'll take the pic as you drive 150 in your Auto Maxima.

why can't there be any roads like that up north?

I don't think most people with stock autos would try it. My car isn't stock though. Also I no longer have a speed limiter because of my G-Force ECU.

So, if a stock 5spd tops out at 144 with wind drag, then I think a modified auto should be able to get 140. Actually, a stock auto *should* be able to get it as well, since top speed is limited by drag more than HP. It just may take a lot of road like someone else mentioned.
I think even if you guys do get a picture with the speedo pegged way past 140, it won't mean that you are going 150 because of speedo error at high speed. Maybe if you can get a pic with the speedo and with GPS registering the speed it would be more credible.
I don't think it's worth the risk of trying it on a public road though, unless someone in AZ or somewhere can get out in the desert and do it ;-)

Cartest shows a stock 4th gen 5spd topping out around 137-138mph @ 5900rpm in 5th gear. A stock automagic would pull 133-134mph @ 4600rpm in 4th gear. Also for any 4th gen maxima to go over 150mph it would need at least 200whp, to overcome the aero/tire drag.

If the stock 4th gen 5 speed was using all of its rated 190 hp (at the crank) to get to 138 mph, then it would require 244 crank hp to get to 150 mph.
190 x (150/138)^3 = 244

Since we know the speedo is unreliable at best when travelling at extra-legal speeds, we should use the tach.
For my car 60mph (well within the speedo's useable range) equals 2100rpm.
2100rpm / 60mph = 35 rpm/mph
I can safely estimate my top speed by using that formula: 4800rpm / 35 = 137mph

I've mashed my stock auto to the floor for about 7 minutes straight five years ago when it was pretty new. It hit 137, only after a gruelingly long time. It stayed at 137 for about 2 minutes with no more gains whatsoever. There's no way in hell that a stock auto with no mods whatsoever could break much over 140 unless hell froze over. 150 would mean your gauges are just plain broken or inaccurate.
