the y pipe is after the headers, headers are available for the max, but provide no performance gains.

Y-pipe just replaces the secondary pipe w/precats on the Maxima with a precat-less, smoother flowing pipe.

Headers would also include exhaust manifold (primary) replacement with a proper tubular header, but no one has produced a viable design yet. The only ones I am aware of that were produced were from a New Zealand company that didn't make any power. This doesn't mean a header won't make more power than a y-pipe, but it suggests that it may be very difficult to do so.

I've heard people refer to a "downpipe" on other cars... is this our y-pipe?

Close enough. Other people might also call it an F pipe or sometimes an H pipe. But basicly the same idea.

H-pipes and X-pipes are on RWD vehicles and us FWD guys use Y-pipes and F-pipes.

Y's and F's are the same thing. H & X pipes are slightly different designs from each other but accomplish the same things.

is that because of the way the engine is mounted?

Yes, yes, I know. After a car has been around 7 yrs (in my case at least) some of the questions do become somewhat redundant. Oh well, I know i've asked a couple of redundant questions, but there's nothing wrong with that

thanks.

yes, "another" y-pipe thread....

I have a pretty good handle on the Max, I just wasn't sure what everyone else was talking about when they refer to the (any letter)-pipe on their cars

The headers are before the Y-pipe. We don't see any gains from aftermarket headers because the stock headers are a pretty good design.
