Pretty Interesting Stuff about the LSD Manual Tranny's !!!

My tranny went in my 96 Maxima so I decided to go with an LSD trans from an I-30...I found one from a 97 with 63K miles on it for $500 so I bought it...I find out that all i need to do is replace the drivers side axel and the pass side is the same as open diff. So I have the speed shop get me an axel from the local axel wharehouse--rebuilt...so about a week after Install its starts to leak at the drivers side axel housing even with a new seal and a new axel...so I have the guy put in another seal and its still leaks...I call raxels.com and talk to a tech and he said Nissan changed the splines in the differential gear in 95 and up years, and didnt advise all of the axel wharehouses around the United States that they did the slight change....So when you go to buy a rebuilt I-30 or Maxima LSD axel its the old configurations that there using for the old spline confifiguration causing leak and possible failure to the bearings and vibration through throttle...Now that must be whats wrong with mine cause I have vib in every gear at 2500RPMS and a slight leak out the axel...the old configuration will Click in, but will cause movement in the shaft, and slight leak and vibration (slight)

Very good info, and Im still looking into it

So the only way to get an axel for an LSD is to :

1) Buy the spline from Nissan and have an Axel Shop build you one..$$ Lot of money $$
2) Try to get a used axel right from the car that the tranny came out of, or same car with LSD..put that in the car, or have it rebuilt for $120..I called some places today...its about $150 used

-Matt

I hope this tech is right...cause there is another .org member that used to have my problem till he called raxels and solved his leak this way...but his brand new i-30 axel broke and raxels gave him the info about it, Solved

NO axel shop will have the right configurations for the Diff. sounds like a big slip up by Nissan

You haven't noticed no leak? So are you just refilling the fluid everyday? Kinda a waste of money, if you ask me - just fix the leak!

Once again i thank God for me being the luckiest person out there... my LSD tranny works beautiful/perfect with my old regular 5spd axles for months now! and also, no snapped shafts to date either KNOCK ON WOOD.

So, with the LSD tranny, you are using your old 5-speed axles? This is so confusing lol, do I or do I not buy the axles when the tranny comes in lol.....

I would get a drivers side axel, the Drivers side is noticably bigger and the other one with from your open diff will not Fit..there are two sets of splines on a locking diff drivers side axel and one set on an open diff
