Is it Possible to Repair a Tach? How does the Tach work?

My tach doesn't work. Hasn't since I bought it. I posted something about this a while back, but didn't get much help... I lived with it and just kept driving. After learning how to get the gauge cluster out (just for the fun of it and out of curiousity), I realized that maybe its fixable (I would prefer not to replace it, or do the odo rollback/fwd).

Questions:
1) Is it repairable?
2) How does it work? -- (curiousity, please humor me )
3) If I need to get new parts, specifically the needle, do I have to make sure I get another 95-96 SE needle to make sure it has the lights in the needle?

Thanks,
-W

I had trouble with my tach. a while ago, and the only solution I was able to find was to replace the gauge. Sorry A new cluster from the dealer will run you around $400 (if I remember correctly), so you might search around on ebay or the .org to see if anyone has one they'd be willing to get rid of. You can just switch the tach. gauge from that one into yours, then you won't have to mess with mileage or anything (that's what I did). Just make sure you do get a 95/96 cluster.

Try junkyards. Get you a good cluster very easily.

Thanks to both of you... =)

1. How did you replace it? Is it difficult? I haven't had the time to really look at the cluster yet, so I'm not quite sure how to do it.

2. Will all 95/96 gauge clusters have the lighted needles?

3. yes, I found a few on eBay that are $50 right now (if you go to completed items you'll see a more acurate price of of how much it will actually be)...
For those of you reading this for help, just do a search with "Maxima" and "Cluster" or "speedometer" and you'll see it.
--I also went to car-part.com but I'm a little skeptical. Sometimes I wonder that if I get one from a junkyard, it will do the same thing... I'm open to opinions on that one.

Thanks,
-W

my tach quit on me.

i bought a new cluster on ebay for like $15

i took the electronics out from the new cluster for only the tach, and swapped the needles too, now everything is the same, mileage, needles, gauge color etc. and it works great.

oo like i would just like just have to change the RPM electronics so that the RPM works right? Casue it will just start to jump and it kinda gets stuck on 2,500 then moves to 3,000 u think its just the electronics.

why dont you email or IM me so we dont clutter up the forum.

i can talk you through it, its simple, even to remove the needle, which may or may not be necessary.

Digital Cluster

I need to have mine replaced also but mine is digital (speedometer)
My question is that if i buy one from a junk yard, will the milage meter automatically adjust to my car's milage? or would you have to bring it to a dealer to program it?

If it's your speedometer that is broken, then I believe you'll have to replace it and probably have to have the odometer adjusted by a dealer (just a guess, I have no real reason to believe that). If it's the tach or any other part, you can just swap those for ones from another cluster without replacing the whole thing.

For those who want to swap out cluster components (and haven't done so already), each one just screws in from the back of the cluster. Once you have the cluster taken out, you can just unscrew them individually from the back.
