225/50 16 or 225/55 16 tires on 99SE
I'm looking to replace my tires with Dunlop SP A2's or Bridgestones RE-950's shortly. I'm interested in the pro's and con's in changing from the stock 215/55 16 inch tires to one of the above sizes. By the way, I have a unmodified 99 SE-L 5 speed. I do mostly highway driving, but will be adding a y-pipe soon. Anyone change from stock to one of these sizes and have postive or negative comments? TIA
i loved the Bridgestones RE-950's when they where on my old integra, i also hear good things about Sumitomo HTR+ and the 225/50 16 can be had for $88. go check out the reviews on tirerack.com for the tires you are looking at.
IMHO you should just stick with the stock 215/55/16. On my last set of tires i went for the 225/50/16 for my 97 SE stock five-spoke rims, and was not happy at all, they were a little shorter than the stock size which makes the wheel gap look worse, especially if you are not planning on lowering. Also i think the 225's are just too wide for the stock rims, causing an unsightly buldge on the sidewall. I also think that extra buldging sidewall made my steering response sloppy. So when those tires finally wore out, i returned to the stock size and was much happier. The only advantage was that the price was a little cheaper, 255/50/16 is a more common size than our stock size, hence a little less expensive. well, do your research, shop around, and good luck.

Thanks for the info on the 225/50 setup!! I'll either get 215/55's or 225/55 16 tires. That pretty much keeps the gap the same.

on the rim, the 225's will bulge out a little.

I got the 215/55 16 Dunlops SP A2's for $427 Installed! Only have 100 miles on them so far. I had to lower the pressure from 40psi from the tire monkeys. Guess they don't have car charts! First impressions are good. Very quiet tire, will be interested in the MPG and handling. 215's Dunlops look very aggressive on this car! Thanks for the advice!!

I paid $500 for all 4 A2’s installed (soon to be) with lifetime balance/rotation and road hazard.
I’m going from 225/55/16 (Came with car) to 215/55/16. The 225’s do bulge out quite a bit so I’m looking forward to the 215’s.
Good luck with the new tires!
