HELP! Clutch and trany questions

I was driving a long yesterday on the highway in 5th at about 70 or 75 not beating on it just cruizin cuz it was early and i noticed a noise like sumthing fell off the car and then i heard it again and then the rpms droped to idol, i poped it out of gear and realized i couldnt get it back into any of the gears. When the truck towed it away i noticed that what ever fluid there was for the clutch was on the ground. The mechanic i had it towed to hasnt looked at it yet but he thinks its my transmision, after thinking this over serveral times i put a few things together, the car had been leaking the same fluid for several weaks, i noticed a while back that one of the resiviors under the hood looked a little low, the clutch had also been sliping really bad from 1st to 2nd when it would usually chirp it would just slip, My thinking is that its the slave cylinder because if it was loosing fluid there would eventually be less and less preasure in the lines to make the clutch engage quickly...my question is what are your opinions on this? im real anxious to know...my other question is what years did they put a locking transmision in the max, mines a 96 se and the transmision i already have on hold just in case at the bone yeard i use to work at is a non locking trany

thanx for any opinions or help on this one

When you lose the master/slave clutch fluid, your clutch remains engauged full force. You can't release it. Quite the opposite of what you describe.

Sounds like maybe your axel shaft was leaking, due to worn out bearings, and cruizing at highway speed they gave way completly, metal went all in your tranny, and you lost the ability to shift

How many miles on the tran ?
