Do you think that is worthwhile trying to see if it works? I was reading a bit of it but I'm not sure if it is just a waste of time. I emailed the guy and he said he'd have to get enough inquiries about it to get them made for the maxima. So here's the sight. You guys tell me what you think. http://www.aatap.com/

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a throttle-less intake system? The accelerator pedal would control a continuously variable valve system from low lift and duration at idle to high lift and high duration at high rpms. I don't know if this would work, I just thought of it on the spot. Think of the throlle response!!! It would be instantaneous!

As for the smart valve thing, I don't know enough about how it works to give a good answer. All I really see that they give you is a picture of a valve and a ring and not how its actuated or how it works.

Edit: Nevermind, there's a page right here (http://www.aatap.com/generic4.html) that shows how it works, but its the end of the day and my brain is fried... and time to get fried.

The idea of something lose or floating in my heads doesn't quite sit too good with me.

This was discussed a while ago. IIRC part of the advantage is these would allow the use of radical cams but still retain drivability according to the manufacturer. They have a dyno of a harly davidson on their site with only the Variable Valves added they gained about 10 lbs of torque around 2000 RPM that tappered off to around 5 ft lbs in the higher RPM ranges. The average tourque increase was 6.8% and a large dip in the power curve was eliminated. Of course our engines probably could not be more different from a Harly so who knows what the would do for us.

The site estimates the cost for a 16 valve 4 cylinder at $1000-1200 so this would be a very expensive mod. I don't know how complicated install would be but I would guess it would be difficult and expensive.

Hey guys.

The VW stuff is going to be coming soon, and then after that, will be the ZETEC, B16/ B18c (yes, they already have VTEC), and probably the 4g63s'.

Each valve will run somewhere around 140.00, or thereabouts, so as you can see this is not a cheap solution. Primary reason for the high cost is due to the machining process involved. As the valves tend to be smaller on the multi valve heads, the work becomes more intricate, and as a result, the cost to do this work runs a bit higher. This is one of the reasons that I have to see what the demand is before making a commitment to do any valves. I know that valves for the mustang will sell, because the motors are popular to mod, and the valves are fairly large. It is another matter alltogether when looking at something as involved as working up heads on a Maxima.

By itself, it may not be worth it. The gains are bound to be minimal, and for such major open heart surgery on your car, you would expect more. In conjunction with another mod, like say JWT cams, that would be cool

Also, it's interesting that the article did not mention BMW's valvetronic, even though they mentioned their VANOS system. I guess the article is old.

From what I understand, the valve is operated by a variable motor on the top of the valve and it repalces the cams altogeather. this would create less friction. If it is operated by a variable motor then it could be better than variable valve timing. From what i hear the price is not that far off from the cams.

I think the cams are still there. This just replaces the valves. Anyhow, if the cams were replaced completely, that modification would be so radical that you would need an entirely new engine management system.

These valves eliminate the low-end power loss due to the large intake/exhaust overlap period of radical cams. Since the Maxima cams are so mild with almost no overlap, these valves would do essentially nothing on a stock motor. The benefit of these valves would only apply to a car fitted with JWT cams or custom high-duration cams.

Since like 0.000001% of the Maxima community have JWT cams or will ever get JWT cams, it's fairly certain that these valves will NEVER be available for a Maxima unless another application coincidentally matches the Maxima's valves.

I'd forget about these cool devices in terms of the Maxima. It ain't gonna happen.
