1999 Maxima Ignition Coils, O2 sensor
1999 Maxima Ignition Coils, O2 sensor
I have read every post regarding ignition coils on this and the 4th Generation forum and I could not have explained the problems I had any better than what was already posted. The car shook, flashing check engine light, terrible gas mileage and acceleration.
The coils went bad a few weeks (maybe days) after the warranty expired, so I called Nissan Canada and they refused to help in any way.
I took my car to the dealership and they told me I had bad coils and would have to replace all of them to fix the problem. I looked at the estimate ($150 per coil x 6 plus tax) picked up my keys and ran out. I decided I better figure out how to fix this myself. I bought 4 coils from the states (2 front &,2 rear) because I read that there was no way all could go bad. I put the coils in and the car ran better but the CEL stayed on and the car still shook. I interchanged my old front coils in the last position and it didn't work. Then I pulled the plug one by one on the coils to see which coil the engine did not respond to. Anyway, it turned out at least all my 3 front coils were gone. So I had to buy one more coil from the dealership in T.O. because I received a drive clean notice. I put the last coil in, said a prayer and the CEL light went off and no more shaking. Problem Fixed! No
Took the car in for a drive clean test. Failed the Hc ppm & No ppm.
Afterwords CEL comes back on, checked the codes and got 0901 right oxegyn sensor & 0304 knock sensor. Has anyone else changed their right 02 sensor and how difficult was it? Has anyone else had these types of problems.
I also replaced my battery recently because apparently my old one was gone. The new OEM battery looks nothing like the old one. The old battey had about 6 plastic screws you had to remove in order to add water to the battery. Did your Maximas come with that battery?
Sorry for the rant, appreciate any feedback

The O2 and KS codes can be related. The "Right" O2 sensor is the one in the exhaust manifold for the rear bank of cylinders. It can be seen and accessed through the passenger-side wheel well. When this sensor goes bad, the ECU cannot effectively manage the air/fuel ratio, possibly upsetting the KS. So start by cleaning all of your O2 sensors with electronics cleaner and see if that cures the problem. Both of your emissions failures could also be related to that bad O2 sensor.
As for the battery, my 1995 Max came with the crappy, non-maintenance-free battery as well. I replaced it with an Exide that didnt even last 3 years and cost me $75. I replaced that one with a $40 Ever Start battery from WalMart.

Fix your O2 sensor first. I had one O2 sensor to go bad in my 1999 at about 40K miles. It's normal for O2 sensors to go bad on the maxima. It's pretty easy to replace O2 sensors. You will need to jack the front of your car up. To remove the O2 sensor you need either an O2 sensor socket or a big 1" combination wrench. Use plenty of WD40. It's easier if you just cut off the wires leading to the O2 sensor. Remove the sensor and follow the wires to the harness in the engine bay. Disconnect the harness and start pulling out all those "snap on" wire holders. It's pretty difficult to run the new O2 sensor wires at the exact some location because of limited space. Try to do your best. Reset your ECU and you should be good.
