Freaking Bearings!!!!

Screw this! I'm done! lol I too suffered from the dreaded bearing failure, though I'm willing to bet that I had one of the worst:

After about three hours of rebuilding I had it done. Though I still need to put it back in the car and make sure that it works again!

JdawgX, what are the long term damage i'm causing my car to keep driving w/ the bearings bad?? I've got the whining sound in 1st, 2nd, and now i can hear it in 3rd. The sounds come up only when the tranny is hot. Lemme know your thoughts, i'd raelly really appreciate it. This problem has been driving my crazyfor the past 2 months and I've been quoted from $800-$1000 to get them fixed.

btw, thanks for the pics

Okay, here's a pic of the inside of the tranny. You can see one of the bearings on the diff. You need to replace both of them. I'll get part numbers for you later today. They cost me 59.99 for each bearing and 16.99 for each seal. You need two bearings and two seals. If you have not done this type of thing before or are not very mechanicly inclined then DO NOT do it. It is not an easy job to accomplish and pulling the old bearings off is a pain in the ***. Let me know of you have any questions at all.

I have the part numbers labeled in the FAQ for the quaife differential install. I too have had this dreaded problem and now it looks like this is yet another case. Yours look really bad.

Bearings- if you have an open diffy, they're the same
the other numbers is
38342-81x01
and 38342x81-00 I forgot which is left and right but thats easy to figure out.

As for shims, that will depend on what your freeplay is, measured with a dial indicator.

Axle seals should be $5 each. $15 is highway robbery. Bearings are probbly $35 or so. Dont pay more then this.

Cheap Oil

I was at Zip Lube the other day getting my tranny oil changed. They said that the cheap **** they used would eat away the bearings in our trannies. So I got some Amsoil stuff for the same price. You havent been using crappy oil have you?

JdawgX: What year is your car and how many miles are on it?

The bearings do look pretty bad. I hope I'm not the next documented case. I've gone through 2 axle seals in less than 8k. I'm still under warranty at 58k, but I doubt Nissan will honor the warranty on the bearings.

has anyone had their bearings go bad after 100k miles??? I'm wondering if mine went out due to wear/tear or if really the shims were incorrect (140k miles). I'm just kinda stumped on that because ppl say they get the prob around 60k. Thanks.

I know you are suppost to use the GL-4 for the regular open diff. but what about the VLSD trannys? My bearings just went out at 75K and the diff. is leaking really bad too. So I just bought a used VLSD tranny to replace it with. And I am going to put in a Clutchmasters Stage 3.

lets hope u knocked on wood. I was running Redline MT-90 for the entire life (except first 20-30k miles). I'm thinking that's why my tranny lasted so long. The original stuff was swapped out when the car was relatively brand new.

i use some universal gl-4,gl-5 Napa stuff 75-80-90-95w weight. i think its too thick. and when my cars cold my 2nd gears grinds alil. but its only when its cold. after when it warms up its fine. u think i should replace that gear. i have 140,000 miles. with the gear oil it never did it. so what u guys think?

There is also some good pics/info at Motorvate:
http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...earing_r&r.htm

See the "Critical Measurement" he mentions regarding bearing preload. If it is wrong, it can cause premature bearing failure. He actually had his bearings fail twice before doing it himself a 3rd time and finding the bearing preload was wrong.
