97 maxima interior light not working when door is open

Guys I have a 97 Maxima with a partially functioning interior dome light. The problem is ever since I had the alternator replaced due to a recall, the interior light no longer automatically comes on when the doors are open. It does work when manually turned on via the dome light switch. I don't think the problem is specifically related to the alternator itself being replaced, but I am wondering was there a fuse blown or a setting changed somewhere during the process of switching out the alternator. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Are you sure the switch is in the correct position?

Whats switch are you referring to? The dome light has an on/off switch that is normally in the off position. The dome light _should_ go on even if the switch is in an off position. This is what is currently not happening.
Thanks

Check the door switches as well. If none of the doors will activate the light upon opening when the dome is on the correct setting, I would assume they activate a relay somewhere and it has either become unplugged or is toast.

unless they changed the 97, it is a 3 position switch. drivers side is on, middle is off but door activated and passenger side is totally off.

There is no three way switch up by the dome light console. Only the on/off dome light button. I have a 97 Maxima SE, so maybe its set up differently. I have also checked elsewhere on the dash and doors, If it were a relay that was causing the problem where would I look and how could I tell the relay is not working correctly?

Thanks

Maybe you dont know your own strength and are so mad that there was a recall you just slam the switch and you totally miss the middle position!

My 97 se has this middle position, and unless maximas grow/evolve/a sexually reproduce nowadays i think yours has it too.

If it were only that easy.. My maxima has an on off button that you depress by pushing inward (as in up into the ceiling). It appears that there are some different styles on how the dome light is situated on the 97 Maximas. In my case the light is situated in front of the sun-roof and shares the same control panel as the sun-roof controls.

I think I may have found some info to go on based on this newsgroup posting I found through google.

Thanks to all that have responded.

That isnt a "dome" light

the light behind your sunroof is your dome light, thats like a courtesy light or somehting, mine never turns on when my doors open either. your max is not broken.

Ok I am man enough to admit that I am a moron. For some reason I thought it was the "courtesy light" that came on when the door opened. I look back further and see that that yes there is a "dome light" with a three way switch. Problem solved.

Feel free to laugh at my stupidity the same way I laugh at the idiots on computer bulliten boards who ask moronic questions.

Thanks for your patience and time.

Im glad your problem is solved and welcome to a great forum. I only wish that instead of admitting your mistake you would have come up with a really funny lie.

Happy Holidays Everyone.
